Drunk and stupid is no way to go through life - even in the land of smiles.

Sorry for being insensitive but would it have been so awful if this idiot had put a hole in the pavement that he couldn't crawl out of?

How is it that so many foreigners fall off balconies in Phuket and Pattaya ? What is going on ?

Combination of alcohol, stupidity and I would suspect balconies that are too low.

I guess the height of the average Caucasian or Westerner makes us vulnerable to tipping over and falling over those low balcony railings. I am only 5' 7" so I have told all my friends here in the States that if you ever read about me falling off a balcony, don't believe it. Of course there won't be much they can do about it.

5'7"? Are you 12? You can buy special shoes that prop you up without anyone seeing the platforms. Sorry, just kidding.

I think that balconies are built low here for sure. Most are way below my waistline, some reach top of my thigh, so for many a drunken stumble can prove fatal.

I tend to subscribe to this theory rather then the one that Thai girlfriends are shoving their foreign boyfriends over the balconies to nick the cash in their wallets.

Hope this guy recovers then he can tell us all how it happened, then Thailand will change all the building regulations from now on regarding the minimal height of balcony railings and walls,,,,, yeah right.

Maybe they were on a second honeymoon or celebrating some important occasion and drank a little too much wine, you don't have to draw a conclusion that he is stupid power drinker.

It's a classic case of cause and effect.

High-rise balcony rails tend to be as as lethally low as the blood pressure of aging Viagra-popping falang occupants - who all too frequently end as literally up a pushover for unhappy hookers.

This case may well be an exception to the rule - but even if it's not, let's pray the poor guy makes a full recovery.

It is strange though that there are so many falls from balconies in Thailand. You never hear of such incidents in other countries to the same extent. Something is obviously unique in Thailand that the rest of the world does not have, not sure what that is though.

Generally - Thais are shorter than foreigners - balcony walls are lower than foreigners' countries. Easier to 'over balance'.

(Alcohol of course plays a part)

Aussie guys, I thought that this is part of the training in jail ? Don't you all train for jump from the top of the prison walls ?

Just wondering ?

UK, guy, told me to ask.

Low railings are very dangerous and once someone starts to go over it is difficult to stop. Should be at least another 6 to 8 inches higher.

That was before the rat bustards starting festooning the walls with razor wire... Tends to make things a little more difficult... Now we train to clear jump the walls, which is also never ending, because those self same rat bustards keep increasing the wall height!

I'm going to buy a harness when I move here, just in case. I will also fit hidden web cams that will upload to the internet at set times. I think these incidents are due to the size of Thai balconies and the amount of people murdered by Thais wanting their monies. If this wasn't the case then how come this sort of thing doesn't happen in Spain with the same frequency?

Perhaps you should encase yourself in a self sustaining bubble so no harm can come to you.

The solution is simple...don't go carrying on with bar girls and even if you do, don't get falling down drunk.....I have lived in many high floored buildings and not once did I feel like falling was a risk. Guys just need to stop being so damned stupid.

It's the Thais' fault apparently. They always get blamed for pushing these farangs off balconies.

That's also something I would like to understand. How come this happens so frequently here?

Well now we got a survivor for once who could shed some light onto this mystery.

Great answer, hahaha, or did the people who threw him off loosen all the bolts, so as too avert suspision? damn, back to square one....
