He has a 90 day stay provided by the non "O" visa which cost 2000 Bht to convert to.

If he wishes to travel during the 90 days he must get a re-entry permit to retain his permission to stay date.

Applying for an extension of stay based on retirement requires 800,000 in a Thai bank for 2 months OR a certified (by his Embassy ) income of 65,000 Bht/month. A combination of money in the bank +income totaling 800,000 is also acceptable. Application should be made during the last 30 days of the 90 day stay.

It is 800k baht in the bank for 60 days or proof of 65k baht income by way of a income letter from his embassy or a combination of the 2 totaling 800k baht to apply for the extension of stay based upon retirement.

After he gets the extension he will need a re-entry permit to keep it valid if he wants to travel.

  • No, there is no reason why he shouldn't be allowed to use the income method or a combination of cash in the bank and income.

Yes he will need a re-entry permit if he leaves the country during the next 90 days. And he will need a new re-entry permit once the 1 year extension of stay is granted.

Believe there may have been a misunderstanding - suspect he showed bank money in a new account for the conversion so will now have to show that money has been in account 2 months prior to requesting the one year extension of stay may have been the meaning.

If it was not a misunderstanding the immigration officer was just plain wrong.

People do the extensions everyday using the income option.

Your friend has already had to "show" money either in the form of an 800,000 Bht deposit in a bank, a letter from his embassy certifying an income of 65,000/month or a combination of the two.

Without "showing the money", which proves he is qualified to apply for an extension, he would have been refused a conversion to an "O" visa" entry.

As said there seems to have been some "misunderstanding"

Many, many people use the income method to support applications for extensions of stay.
