Maximum time in Thailand in 180 day time frame

Featured Replies

I wanted to clarify some visa issues particularly concerning the maximum time you can stay in Thailand over a six month period.

I am an American citizen who received a 60 day visa from the Thai consulate in the US and arrived in Thailand on December 15. I did not extend my visa for an additional 30 days at the end of this time period in mid February as I wanted to travel to Myanmar while the country still had relatively cool weather.

I stayed one week in Myanmar and was issued a 30 day visa exempt stamp at Chiang Mai airport upon my return in late February. I would like to extend another 30 days from mid March until mid April and depart Thailand at that time.

Will the extension request for 30 days be an issue? That would put me at 120 days total. Also, after my visa expires in mid April -- presuming I can extend -- I wish to return to Thailand for another 30 day visit around early May before flying to Europe in early June. Will I have any difficult on this additional entry into country in May?

Since I would be in Thailand approximately 5 out of the 6 months from mid December to early June, I am not sure if that is ok to attempt since I continue to read you are only allowed to stay a max of 90 days in a six month period. But perhaps, I am hoping that does not include exiting the country twice during this time frame.

  • There is no time limit. You can stay all year if you are granted a visa or visa exempt entry.

You should have no problem getting a 30 day extension of stay. No issue.

You do not have a visa. You entered the country without a visa under the tourist visa exempt scheme.

Getting a second visa exempt entry shouldn't be a problem but after that you'd be best advised getting a tourist visa if you want to stay longer.

I am not sure where you learnt about this 180 day time frame but it does not exist !

I will not repeat the good advise given by elviajero.

The last time that I left Thailand was in May 2003!

OP you can obtain a second visa exempt stamp no problem. BTW did you have flight out of thailand when you flew in from Myanmar and obtained visa exempt. You will need flight out also for your next visa exempt stamp

Think your wrong with that info, he is an American and as one of the G-7 countries gets 30 days visa exempt at border crossings.

My comments were about FLIGHTS mainly because he flew into Chang mai and obtained a stamp. Did not cross at border.

What do you believe is the problem with flying in and "not crossing a border" ?

Why must the OP, in your opinion, have a flight out? What would prevent the use of a land border?

He FLEW into Chang mai. The airline prior to boarding would want to see an on going flight if he did not have a visa. Which he did not. What don't you understand.

Also if he exits next after his stamp expires and tries to enter at border he MAY

have trouble as back to back visa exempt. He will not if he arrives los by air. However he will require an outbound flight. Got it now?

NONSENSE !

It is true that SOME airlines require to see an onward flight if a person does not have a visa. This is not universally enforced especially within SE Asia.

Why should the OP experience a problem obtaining a second VE entry if a land border is chosen ? Are there masses of reports testifying to a 2nd VE being refused at land borders ?

Stop the scaremongering which has no basis in fact.

I suggest lot of airlines would want to see outbound flight. Some consulates will only issue setv with outbound. Bali one example.

Re border crossings.....I said he MAY have trouble if he did in out leaving with stamp and turn around stamp.

You seem to use the word NONESENSE a lot.

If you fly often you would know that no visa is present and relying on stamp airlines can and often do ask for outbound flight.

Finally the op did not mention border crossings. You and other poster did

"Re border crossings.....I said he MAY have trouble if he did in out leaving with stamp and turn around stamp."

Actually, that's not what you said.

"You will need flight out also for your next visa exempt stamp" From post number 5.

Give me a break. The op never mentioned entering via border. In post 5, I was clearly referring to FLYING.

Why not concentrate on answers for the op. My posts have been clear.

1. If he wants to fly into Los without a visa I suggest he may (most likely) need to show outbound flight.

If he elects to exit by border ( with a visa exempt stamp in pp) and wish to turn around and ask for another stamp, he MAY be refused.

You of course failed to notice/appreciate the OP is actually in Thailand !

"I stayed one week in Myanmar and was issued a 30 day visa exempt stamp at Chiang Mai airport upon my return in late February. I would like to extend another 30 days from mid March until mid April and depart Thailand at that time."

Give us all a break please.

Yes he will be departing with a stamp. The one he obtained in Chang mai. IF he wishes to reenter and extend his stay by obtaining a second visa exempt stamp, then no problem. No problem with immigration but possible problem with airline. Of course I realize he is here. He is asking about how to stay longer. Why don't you give him concrete suggestions rather than nit pic. Perhaps not .......you will suggest he fly in with one way ticket. Problematic at best

The "concrete" suggestions/answers were all supplied in post 2 and supported by me in post 3 !

You have added nothing !

A off topic post and a reply to it has been removed. Enough of the bickering time to end it.
