20 KG is not much with some exercises you will soon use it and it wont help at all, other exercises you will never go past it. It is safe to say for the compound exercises like, Dumbbell press, Shoulder press and squats (using them as weight) you will soon find them useless. For stuff like side raises, front raises, dumbbell curls, tricep kick back you will have more then enough.

Just for the exercises that give the most bang for the buck and incorporate the most muscles they are not sufficient.

Instead of buying Dumbbells I would join a gym, i got my own personal gym but at a price and after 8 years of use I still havent gotten all of my money out of it (got nice gear and maybe if i resell it I will have all my money back and more as it keeps it value but if I set value at 0 im still not there) I only bought stuff for my home gym as there were no gyms here when i came to live here.

Side note, you said your fat, controlling what you eat will help you loose your fat better as exercise. But if you do both you will have synergy and it will be better as its always good to exercise.

Thanks for that. Would 30 kg or 50 kg be enough?

Are these good value for money? Thanks.

Hi,

The 50 kg one (take it 2 times) would be sufficient for sure. You will never use more, it looks like it has a barbell too. Though I would be a bit scared to use it with 100 kg because its not made from one piece. 100kg might sounds like a lot but if you train consistent for 1 year you can deadlift it easy and squat maybe too (though loading it would be a problem)

I would advise to buy a bench with this one that can be set in height and such. I am not sure where your located but I would still go for a gym. I don't know what your experience is in the gym but some movements really need to be taught.

Personally with a bench and barbell you and dumbell 2x that set you will be able to quite a lot if not everything you need to do.

But its quite an investment if you add a bench it would equal almost 10 months at a gym. So only if you are really serious should you even consider it.

But for sure you will go over 25 kg with dumbell presses in no time. If you can deadlift then you will be at 100kg soon too.. but you can then increase reps.

It sounds like a lot but some movements really get strong quite fast if you train a few times a week.. even at your age.

One of my mistakes was buying stuff that was not good enough and that I had to replace later when i got stronger or wanted more.

I can sell you a second hand bench for only 2000 bt (but it would require you to pick it up)

Lazada has terrible deals on free weights. There are private companies that sell through Facebook (very popular in Thailand). PM me and I will send you some of the links. They also have cheap weight benches and such if you don't need a super high quality one.

He should get at lease a bench that can be adjusted to an incline.

If you can find some companies that sell 50mm (olympic standard) rubercoated weights at a good price let me know.

Personally I would always go to a gym unless there are none or you really like training at home and know what your doing.

I have a home gym.. love it.. but if its economical..... on the long run.. years and years.. sure.

These places don't really have many large weight plates (much less rubber coated). They are mostly dumbbell free weights that can be ordered in sets depending on the weight you want.

I go to a gym, but also have weights, resistance bands, and some other stuff at home.

Thanks, for the information.

So your doing 2 things a gym and home.. can be done. I am training home 100% and got it all bought it over the years from professional manufacturers and imported some stuff. It is great once you have it but cost me a lot of money. For some training at home is good (me) for others its better to go to a gym. To be honest I think most people are better off at a gym.

I have years of training experience and am quite consistent in what I do but many people buy gym equipment only to never use it again after half a year or so. Others don't have the experience to train at home (knowing the right exercise and doing it correct).

That leaves a small category for who a home gym is good (if there is no access to a real gym then sure get some weights)

From experience weights up to 40 kg would be best. You could do squats then to with dumbbells and even have enough weights for dumbbell bench press and dumbbell shoulder press. If you then get a pull up bar too you can do most major muscles.(though 80 kg squat is not much and most will go higher).

Its better to buy good stuff with an eye to the future as having to buy and resell it. I had all those dumbbells with 30mm weights and sold them all off at a loss going to 50mm and later getting iron-man quick-lock dumbbells up to 120lbs (imported them and customs ripped me off).

But it really depends what kind of person the OP is and how long he will train and so on.

I actually only have the stuff at home in case I can't make it to the gym on a specific say. I do my best to workout at least 6 days a week.

It's become a bit of an obsession that I really enjoy now. I don't know if I will be able to keep it up forever, but I am really benefiting from it (better focus, improved sleep, better health, etc.) I used to be significantly overweight and I made the decision a few years back to lose the weight and make my health a priority from that point on.

And I am not saying this in a derogatory manner, but seeing how many people in Bangkok have become obese helps remind me that I don't want to return to that lifestyle.

I was obese too or at least overweight.. lost 25 kg in 2011 and kept it off. I am quite fanatical in training and quite muscular now, I just don't exercise 6 times a week. It would not be possible with my program as I need to recover too. (plus it might be a bit too much to keep up indefinitely).
