Konerak Sinthasomphone, Laotian victim of US serial Killer Jeffrey Dahmer

So I was watching a documentary on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, aka the Milwaukee Cannibal. He molested, killed and ate 17 men and boys in the 80s.

It sort of made me think of Thaivisa because we often criticize the police in this part of SE Asia, but in this case the US police let down one of the victims, who was Laotian.

Early on Dahmer molested a 13 year old Laotian boy, who managed to escape before being killed. After writing a 'letter of apology' Dahmer ended up not going to prison, instead being given 5 years probation. During that probation period he went on to kill other boys and young men.

Three years later, by coincidence his next victim was the younger brother of the first Laotian boy. Konerak Sinthasomphone, who was 14 at the time.

Dahmer lured him back to his home with the offer of money for naked pictures, then drugged him and drilled a hole in his skull to fill with acid, a technique he used to try to keep them semi-alive but unresisting (he liked to have sex with them while they were half dead).

Dahmer left to buy beers at a bar, and Konerak escaped. Dahmer found him on the way home naked on the street, delirious from the drugs and acid in his skull, talking in Laotian to some women on the street. Dahmer pretended that Konerak was his 19 year old boyfriend, and had got drunk after a quarrel.

The women didn't let him take Konerak home, and the police turned up as they'd dialled 911 shortly before Dahmer arrived. The police told the women to 'butt out' and not interfere with a 'domestic' incident. Even when the women pointed out Konerak was bleeding from his buttocks, the police escorted him home with Dahmer. They didn't search the apartment even with a foul smell of decomposition there, or check Konerak's age, or check Dahmers background (he was already a registered sex offender).

Once alone Dahmer then killed and dismembered the boy.

The part of the case stirred racial tensions in the community (some of his other victims were ethnic minorities too), with the police being accused of being too trusting of a charismatic white male who could've been stopped years ago.
