Maintenance crew detained after finding corpse when they returned to carry out repairs in the residential building in Xi'an

XIAN: -- The discovery of a woman's body in a lift in the Chinese city of Xi'an has led to the detention of a maintenance crew who improperly cut off power to the lift a month ago without checking if anyone was inside.

In a statement posted on Saturday, the Gaoling district government said two maintenance workers turned off the power source on January 30 to the lift in a residential building after they were called to check on a glitch.

When a crew returned a month later, on March 1, for repairs, they found a female corpse there, the government said.

Horrendous way to die.

If she had a mobile phone in her possession when trapped, she would probably still be alive today.

Maybe. Mobile phones don't work in the elevator where I work. Once the doors close the signal either goes completely off, or drops off significantly.

most elevators if power goes out will descend to the first floor and doors will open, but this is China it doesn't work like "most" places....and perhaps this elevator was really old and did not have that safety feature

This unfortunate woman is dead in this way because CCP China began to industrialise 30 years ago and as a consequence all of 'em have yet to begin to think about safety measures or precautions. There apparently had also been no alarm system independent of the main power source.

Industrial or consumer safety in the CCP is almost completely lacking or hardly a thought in literally all respects to include in the home. China emerged only one generation ago from the Age of Agriculture which Mao had done nothing significant to surpass.

It's a culture that remains ancient and in many ways pre-industrial. CCP China has modernised rapidly but its culture is not yet modern. CCP Chinese have no clue of modern or advanced economy or society in the way it is lived in Europe or in North also South America, Australia/NZ or even in Dubai and much less in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore.

Even the USSR industrialised when China did not. Consequently our socio-cultural awareness and values are absent from mainland China. Size matters to the CCP as the focus has been on big GDP numbers ("man made" as they are). Quality comes later if ever. The environment there is a catastrophe. The government remains a dictatorship that in fact hasn't any idea of a modern economy or of its impact on people in 21st century society.

Yet the CCP Chinese believe 100% they remain the center of civilisation and are its primary agent of advancement. The contact with global realities is wholly absent. No clue whatsoever.

First I've ever heard of this, as there is no control, my belief is that safety brakes activate to STOP and movement.

I guess I take back what I say, its not "most" elevators, its depends on the brand and they need to have a "battery lowering device" which is essentially a backup battery which enables the elevator to reach ground floor or the closest lower floor.

In Europe, Industrialisation started some 250 years ago, whereas the social aspects of this development were very slow in recognition. These social reforms, including safety of personnel, only started to become serious issues within the last 150 years. The facts about China's rapid move from an agrarian society are plain to see, but the reforms of working practices (whilst never fast enough), are likely to be implemented much sooner than they were in the West.

Virtually everything today happens much faster than things occurred 150 years ago and certainly at a lightning speed contrasted to 250 years ago, so a CCP would-be apologist needs profoundly better arguments.

CCP for instance made a conscious decision to ignore the environment in favor of rapid industrialisation and while knowing full well the consequences of industrialisation to the environment in the West.

CCP idiots figured people in Europe and USA accepted sewage in the streets of crammed industrial "housing", polluted air and water, throughout so much time during industrialsation that CCP people would accept it too. CCP people do not accept it. Wrong wrong wrong.

CCP themselves are well aware of evolved and high safety standards in the West and in places such as Japan, S Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, but don't want to bother with such expensive and diversionary matters. Big GDP is all that matters to them.

CCP state corporations that dominate the economy don't care in the least bit. The minority who are the new capitalists want only to pay the least while getting the most in profits, much the same as the 19th century capitalists of the West and still a few too many today.

In a CCP factory or office building floor to include in the home one faces a constant snag of wires, jacks, holes, overhangs, sharp edges, stairway steps narrow to the foot and a great deal more like it. Outside the sidewalks crumble and pitch while outdoor burning is common. Traffic has the virtual right of way on sidewalks which are also packed with parked cars and you'd better look both ways before you cross. Taxi drivers think they're at the Indy 500. Schools let out for lunch so tens of thousands of kids on bicycles swarm the streets while cars zoom past all horn no brakes (schools are not neighborhood schools as they are in USA).

That's if your building doesn't fall over.....

Do you actually know this for a fact? I seriously doubt this is true. How can the lift possible still work when the power is shut off?

I have to correct what I say, its not most elevators....

But ones with the feature uses back up battery, I have it at my office ...you can also search on the web for more info "battery lowering device" or "emergency power operation"
