francois
hi' the simplyest for you is to reinstall using the second screen for repair, the first one is using the asr ... useless unless you know command lines ... the second one after agreed, is to type "r" and then windows will repair itself, you just have to think to go to windows update then to get all the update back francois Edited October 26, 2006 by francois

Jamie
Are you talking about Windows Internet Explorer or the Windows XP OS itself (like when you go to the start button and hit "search")?
astral
It is the Windows Explorer, not IE. I have done a google search and found how to install the Recovery Console using winnt32.exe, but do not appear to have this programme on the installation CD. What next? waldwolf
astral - A couple of questions: 1) Are you running IE6 or IE7 ? (Yes, I understand your talking about Windows Explorer, but they are both functionally related.) 2) Do a Start/Run/Regedit and check the following entry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ In the right pane, what is the value shown for "NoFind" ? waldwolf
astral
No sign of it on the installation disk that came with the computer.

I am on IE6 2. There is no value for NoFind, it is not on the list.
waldwolf
1. I am on IE62. There is no value for NoFind, it is not on the list. Hum......very strange. Ok, lets try this. Do the Start/Run/Regedit bit and go back to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ Click Edit/String/BinaryValue and enter NoFind as the name. Then double click the new name, and in the new window, enter 01 00 00 00 Close windows, then open and test your Windows Explorer search function. Does above work now? If not, go back to the NoFind entry and delete it (and I'll go back to my references books.) waldwolf
waldwolf
astral - Sorry, my error. You should enter 00 00 00 00 in that window not 01 00 00 00 waldwolf

astral
On the winnt32.exe part of the question. I borrowed the file off a friend's computer and managed to install the Recovery Console. It even went to MS for the latest version. Thanks to all who offered advice and assistance. Astral
