Hello.

I'm in Chiang Mai and I've been going to Mai Sai and back on the 30 day arrival visa for a long time. Now I have already renewed that 30 day stamp one time since Oct. 1st, and soon those initial 30 days will expire.

Is it correct that the 90 day limitation only applies to this 30 day on arrival stamp? Recent reading on this site would suggest that the 90 day visas such as available in Malaysia also require 90 days between renewals as well. It seems that you can only get 90 days at a time on either visa. But can I go back and forth between doing a 90 day visa and then doing 30 day stamp on arrival for 3 times (90 days) and then back to the 90 day visa, etc., or do I actually have to leave the country for 90 days after being here 90 days on either type of visa? Please someone confirm this to me. I don't have long to make my plan.

Also, I have heard that Penang is still issuing the 90 day visa but only single entry. I have never been to Penang but I understand it is cheaper to fly and stay there than is Kual Lumpur. Is that true? What about Vientienne? What is the cheapest place to fly r/t and easiest place to receive the 90 day visa (from Chiang Mai)?

Are there any restrictions or requirements to receive the 90 day visa?

If I do go to Penang, KL, Vientienne, etc., is it equally possible to get a 6 month or 1 year without a lot of effort or additional cost involved? I only know a little about the non-immigrant B and I know I can read more about it here, I just dont know if there are easier possibilities as well.

One more questions. It is possible I may be going to the States soon for a brief period. In that case I don't need a 90 day visa. But if I have received only two 30 day stamps before leaving to the States, can I still come back any time and get another 30 day on arrival, as long as I didn't stay a full 3 months before leaving? Or can I only re-enter with a 90 day visa after having two 30 day stamps and then leaving? This I've never been able to find out.

Thank you so much,

Christian

The rule is days in Thailand on visa free entry - once you reach 90 no more. You should still be able to enter with a valid visa. How likely Consulates are to issue these visas is subject to mixed opinions. It appears that more than one is unlikely from one Consulate but we don't know if others will say no or if you can maybe get the next in another Consulate.

The 90 day visa you speak about I assume is a tourist visa that allows 60 days on entry and can be extended 30 days. Most Consulates will issue at least one.

Non immigrant visas require specific requirements to be met and without work/wife/retirement are not likely to be available to most.

Until you reach 90 days you can enter without visa.
