Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko remains defiant

MOSCOW: -- A Ukrainian pilot has given a message of defiance to a Russian court, holding up her middle finger to the judges as she shouted “Here is my last word” from behind a glass barrier.

Prosecutors allege that Nadiya Savchenko, who had transferred from the air force to fight with Ukrainian ground forces, helped direct artillery fire in the Luhansk region.

Two Russian television reporters were killed by a shell as a result, they say.

She is considered a national hero in Ukraine and during her imprisonment was elected a member of the country’s parliament for Yuliya Tymoshenko’s Fatherland Party.

“I think that the Western leaders, the leaders of the world’s leading nations and people in the whole world should today stand up together against ‘Putinism’ [the policies of President Putin] and that means for the defence of Nadiya Savchenko, for the defence of Ukraine and against the war in Ukraine,” Tymoshenko told euronews at a demonstration in support of Savchenko outside the Russian embassy in Kyiv.

The court’s verdict is expected on March 21, but Savchenko wants to know her fate now.

She remains defiant and warns that she will continue refusing food or liquids. She gave the court a week to announce the verdict, saying otherwise she might not live to hear it.

Euronews reporter Sergio Cantone at the Kyiv demonstration reported: “The Ukrainians last hope for getting Nadiya Savchenko released is huge international pressure on Moscow, because everybody here thinks that every decision is in the hands of Vladimir Putin.”

International pressure on Putin. Sorry that will not make any difference, Putin thinks he is bigger/ stronger than anybody.

The Russians are using this poor woman for propaganda purposes.

Putin will let her die before he bows to any outside pressure.

This is one of Russia's way of intimidating neighbors. They held an Estonian in prison for more than a year after they crossed the border to kidnap him. Maybe it's time for a taste of their own medicine and arrest Russians abroad on BS charges and put in jail for 20 years. Be careful out there Russian TV members!

As for this..

"She was fighting in AIDAR BATTALION. Now you google about this group. A bunch of neo-nazis."

Maybe she was, maybe she wasn't. What you fail to realize is that IT DOES NOT MATTER. Everyone should come out to defend their country when it is invaded by an aggressive "brotherly" neighbor. Everyone from the far right to the far left and everyone in between.

I hope they keep sending as many zinc boxes back to Putin as possible until Muscovites grow a pair and drag him out into Red Square and put an end to the misery in Russia and its neighbors.

It is just a messy bloody civil war over there; neither Russia, nor Ukraine are doing the right thing. Ukraine is subduing its separatist regions. Russia used to be in the same shoes too, when it invaded its separatist region Chechnya twice. Many helped Chechnya from around the world, including by paramilitaries and arms. Georgia invaded its separatist regions South Ossetia and Abkhazia a few times, the rebels being helped from outside. Serbia invaded its predominantly Albanian separatist region of Kosovo. Its former region.

It is the war of the ultra-right. Ukrainian ultra-right, who made a coup d’etat in 2014 out of a democratic meeting in the beginning. The ultra-right started using weapons against the police, not vice versa. Now the ultra-right dominate the government. These guys cannot negotiate with separatists. From the Russian side this is a war of intelligence services, most aggressive regular army ranks who are being sent to command over the rebels, and lots of ultra-right Russian volunteers who fight as paramilitaries.

A problem is not that much with Putin himself, but with the people’s call for the leaders like him. If not Putin, then his twin. At least Putin the king restricts the ultra-right who have no brain at all. After this fragile order is broken, a civil war would break out in Russia itself. Lots of ethnic minorities in the Russian Federation would not forgive Russian ultra-right if they discriminate. And they would, right like Ukrainian ultra-right do.

I saw her on the news yesterday, and she gave the judge this gesture

I always thought this to be an Italian thing, looks like the Ruskies and Ukies do it too.

Regardless of the particular incident, I admire her strength and defiance.

The war was completely manufactured by the Russian side. According to Igor Strelkov, on Russian TV no less, admitted that they couldn't find people wanting to fight so they had to import mercs from Russia.

The ultra-right in Ukraine do not dominate the gov't. Unless you consider it ultra-right when someone doesn't want to give in to the Russian criminals controlling Donbas with the full backing of Putin. Then, yeah, they are dominated by the far right.

Silly Russians always wanting a "strong leader" even though such leaders have caused the Russian people (and their neighbors) much misery for their entire history. Sad.

mopar71, of course the war was manufactured; Igor Strelkov is the Russian Intelligence' nominee. When they can't find people to fight and have to import them from Russia, - that is what I meant by saying it's the war of the ultra-right, and lots of ultra-right Russian civilians volunteer. While squads, companies' leaders come from Russian regular army ranks, predominantly volunteers too. The military want to excel in their job. This war discharges Russia from its very combative ultra-right and nationalist activists, who can't fail to take the bait and go practice at war. Otherwise they make highly organized terror inside Russia. Lots of ultra-right activists in Russia are in prisons, since their last attempt to bring in a 'White revolution' in 2006-2008. You can't imagine how many skinhead gangs were dismissed and partially captured after a series of blasts, attacks on immigrants, street fights and blasts in public places in Moscow, Moscow region, SPb. Very well organized and backed up by elected people in legislatures and even federal parliament.

Indeed, the ultra-right in Ukraine dominate the government. Take a look here in English or here from German MP (I'm not citing Russian media, like Russia today, they are too biased). Donbass itself has been too criminalized since 1990s, this is why its residents welcomed taking arms instead of putting up with new power and compromising with it. Russia itself nearly avoided ultra-right takeovers in 1990s, when its economy was low. Since now it is getting lower, there is a real threat of it again. If you can see what I mean, you would realize how sophisticated and smart the politics of Russian authorities led by Putin are. While US presidents manipulate democracy with real economy tycoons behind their backs, Putin has utmost authority inside the country. Like a tsar, or like Joseph (Stalin).

It is silly to support him as a strong leader of course, like over 80% of the population do. You cannot change the people's nature or force them to anything. Who could predict so cultural Germany would back up horrible Hitler 70 years ago... And it was like almost like yesterday.

You can't bring up these people by NATO shells too.
