BANGKOK, 11 March 2016 (NNT) - The Thai government, together with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and the World Health Organization (WHO), are organizing a two-day international conference concerning disaster risk reduction efforts, with particular attention going to the growing number of public health emergencies and disaster risk management.

The organization of the international conference is among Thailand's many roles in promoting the implementation of the Sendai framework, a global blueprint to reduce disaster losses and disaster risk for the next 15 years.

More than 120 senior government officials from 50 countries as well as participants from the health sector, academia, science and technology, civil society and other relevant agencies came to the event to identify best practices for disaster risk management that draws on their experiences of epidemic and pandemic preparedness.

The conference aims to get agreements on a series of recommendations that will strengthen the disaster resilience of health systems and advocates a greater focus on health in terms of trading and early warning systems.

Public Health Minister Dr. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said the conference provided a great opportunity to promote the resilience of health systems as a key element for disaster risk management and that each individual is a moving force to implement the Sendai Framework, with an aim to reduce the loss of lives when catastrophes strike.

The Director-General of the Department of International Organizations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pornprapai Ganjanarintr, stressed that the conference is both significant and timely. Thailand is ready to share its experiences and practices in disaster risk reduction and health, especially the concept of a people-centered principle to reduce risk and uncertainties, as guided by the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

UNISDR Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction Dr. Robert Glasser agreed that the Sendai Framework offers a way forward to strengthen resilience as disasters continue to kill thousands and affect millions of people and their livelihoods every year, and integrating disaster risk reduction approaches in health policies is critical.

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 was adopted at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction on March 18, 2015, and endorsed by the UN General Assembly on June 3, 2015.

The Sendai Framework is a 15-year, voluntary, non-binding agreement that succeeds the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters. The goal of the new framework is to prevent new risks, and reduce existing ones, and to strengthen resilience to natural and man-made hazards in order to achieve substantial reductions in disaster losses.
