I recently cleared a long overstay and paid up and they were OK about it, just said don't do it again etc...

I returned few days ago on a 1 month visa exempt

Is there anyway I could apply for a 6 month metv from another nearish country without flying back to Europe?

Thx in advance...

OK lol :)

I don't mind going back anyway to visit

Anyways, am I correct in thinking I have just 29 days stay allowed or can I pay immigration 1900thb to extend?

You can apply for a 30 day extension in the last week or so of your 30 days. 1,900 baht.

Is Austrailia out, now for non-Aussies?

Or is the OP from a country that doesn't get the type of entry-permit which they previously accepted for Brits and Americans?

Or is the overstay in his passport a potential red-flag at an Aussie consulate (and potentially his home-consulate/embassy, as well) for this particular visa?

The OP does not say what his nationality is other than implying he is from Europe.

Good advice has been provided.

The OP is, of course free to apply for an METV anywhere he chooses.

The "overstay" will not, usually, be an issue.

edit

removal of typo.

I thought to apply for a METV you had to prove that you were legally resident in the country you were applying in.

There has been a couple of exceptions allegedly posted on here by a Brit obtaining one in Australia while on holiday there.

Or something along those lines anyway.

Being legally resident is (usually) a requirement for the application to be accepted. However, you are free to try applying anywhere. You are just likely to have the application rejected. I would seriously advise anyone considering making a trip to Australia, relying on getting an METV there, to evaluate the risks involved. Try to get verbal assurance from the consulate before traveling. If the consulate is accommodating, do not blab about it here and potentially get the helpful consulate into trouble.

There has been ONE report from a Brit obtaining an METV from OZ. Then there was a post re email from Perth stating they would issue METV to non au nationals. Later there was an email with opposite. I would not go to AU to obtain an METV unless your australian

The OP said "nearish country".

I think it's possible to get the METV from AUS, but I wouldn't recommend anyone make a special trip, from Thailand, to find out.

Based on? One post from a UK chap who stated he obtained an METV while on holiday in OZ. To go to oz in order to obtain a METV would be one heck a leap of faith.

I think we are in agreement!

I'm saying that based on a couple of reports and the Embassies/Consulate websites I think it's possible to get a METV as a non-resident. BUT based on the recent consulate email, and the fact that consulates worldwide are notorious for pushing their boundaries when issuing visas, I wouldn't pay for an expensive trip to find out. And it doesn't make any sense anyway as 3 SETV's obtained locally to Thailand would be far cheaper.

IMO if a lot of expats living in Thailand start turning up in Australia to get the METV any door that might be open now will get shut.

There was also a report from an American who got a METV in Australia. But you are probably right that, unless going anyway, it might turn out to be a wasted trip, given there is no consistency demonstrated.

Hopefully, when my SETV options start to dry-up next year, Australia will be open for METV business, following the rules they have posted on their sites, which (last I checked) state that those who qualify for certain Australian entry-visas are qualified.

Otherwise, when you add up the costs of going to the USA or Europe, it probably makes sense - both financially and in the "hassle" factor - for under-50s to go lawyer-shopping for other options. Maybe that's the way "they" want it, and who am I to buck the powers that be?

whistling.gif IF you are an American looking for a METV....the best deal you can currently get in the U.S. is probably from the Thai Honorary consulate in Portland, Oregon.

But as I read it you will still need to show $ 7200 Dollars.to cover expenses for 6 months in Thailand.

Go on to their website and read it for yourself.

What makes it a "deal"?

Them asking you for less documents. Consulates have less requirements than Embassies, particularly Honorary Consulates.

Hawaii might work. I have heard that the consulate there is really easy going and it is only half way to the Mainland USA. however I don't know if any country but your home country can issue a METV. Your best bet is to call Hawaii and Australia ahead of time and ask.

I know Korea only does them for people who have a resident ID card (citizens and non citizens alike).

LAX and Honolulu are both probably easier since so many flights go through LA. Portland will likely require connecting flights.

The LA consulate didn't even look at my financial proof when I got my year long multi-ed visa a couple years ago.
