BMA dredges weeds out of canals for water management

BANGKOK, 18 March 2016 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has dispatched more than 500 officials to different areas across the capital city to remove water hyacinths, as part of efforts to mitigate flood and drought.

Bangkok Deputy Governor Amorn Kitchawengkul presided over the opening ceremony at Lat Krabang district. The event was attended by Director of the Department of Drainage and Sewerage Sompong Wiangkaew, relevant division heads, and BMA officials.

Mr. Amorn explained that the canal cleanup was aimed at improving the capital city’s drainage system. The BMA is to complete the task by the end of the month, as instructed by the prime minister.

The BMA has since January dredged 971 canals out of 1,682. More than 400,000 tons of water hyacinths has been removed. The Deputy Governor said the BMA had also launched other measures to seek public participation in the canal cleanup campaign.

yea,a lot of good those workers are doing

they are just cutting off the leaves and leaving the roots to grow bigger leaves

then new year they can come back and cut them back again

They make piles of it along the canal. Than a big truck with a gripperarm comes and drives over the pavement, cracking all the drains and tiles. I've seen it many times.

It's an endless battle fighting those waterhyacynth's. Why isn't there a good solution against them? Would be great if some university could develop it.

Mitigate flood and drought. So its a one fix all cure.

Strange because I would think the vegetation would reduce evaporation and purify the water. The BMA of course would know more than me after all look how successful the continual Thai water crisis has been managed!

Rubbish, they're using rakes to drag the whole lot out of the water, there's no cutting involved at all. Go and find something else to bash.

What makes you think that "they crack all the drains", do you have x-ray eyes? Obviously you have no idea how deep drains are laid.

I wonder if BMA can read better than you also? This is not a one fix cure all...

Ok Einstein, maybe you can explain how this work will improve the drought situation or assist in conservation of water.

In regards to volumetric flow rate, it is obvious that improvements in the Reynold's number, velocity profile, cross section area and removal reducing energy dissipation and turbitity, reduction in the dimension of boundary layer all are clearly beneficial.

That's nice. I'm sure that will completely solve Thailand's drought problem. In the meantime, in the real world, Gov. Brown is trying to push through a $15 billion tunnel project to divert delta water to SoCal. In the real world, they actually try to solve longterm water shortages. All Thailand's infrastructure spending is going to transport, and none of it to water resource security.

Because almost all the streetdrains are broken anyway and i've seen them getting broken by those trucks....Also the pavement can't stand their weight.
