EIT’s findings show workers are believed to die of overexposure to pyrogen aerosol

BANGKOK: Excessive inhalation of pyrogen aerosol and not lack of oxygen was believed to be the actual cause of deaths of eight workers assigned to upgrade the fire-fighting system at the SCB Park building on Sunday, according to the latest findings of the Engineering Institute of Thailand.

Professor Suchatvee Suwansawat, president of the EIT, said on Friday that the eight workers of a subcontractor might have been overexposed to pyrogen aerosol for over 15 minutes causing the chemical to block the passage of respiratory system, resulting to abnormal heartbeats and reduction of oxygen in the brains.

From information obtained from the producer of pyrogen aerosol, he said that the chemical did not deplete oxygen from the air and tests at the site of the accident showed that there were 18 percent oxygen in the room where the workers were found unconscious.

It was also assumed that dust collected at the smoke and dust detector or newly-created dust could have triggered the fire extinguishing system to activate automatically.

Meanwhile, Ms Busakorn Saensook, chairwoman of the engineering safety panel of the EIT, explained that normally the fire extinguishing system would have two sets of smoke detection circuits and the two circuits must be functional in order to set off the system to release pyrogen aerosol. However, she said that there would be a 60-second warning for the countdown.

She said on-site investigation also showed that the fire extinguishing system was not shut down when the workers went in to upgrade the system. Also, the smoke detection circuits were not covered up indicating that the fire extinguishing system started automatically.

As for police investigation, arrest warrants have been issued for five individuals who include the project engineer of the contractor’s company, the building manager and an employee of Abit Multi System Company.

Who writes this rubbish? The ThaiPBS report is seriously lacking. If what they write is from the engineering institute report, is is also seriously flawed.

so how is this different than anything else that goes on in Thailand?

dress up and pretend. what is to know? just do.

i am amazed the fire suppression system worked at all.

were they wearing vests that say "Security" and have whistles?

Cause of death is usually pronounced by a doctor, not an engineer.

I belive it was....they suffocated, but it would take an engineer, not a doctor to say how with respect to fire supression system
