Japan agreed to provide Cambodia with a $181 million loan yesterday to help the renovation of National Road 5 linking Phnom Penh to Poipet, to help expand the Japanese Bridge and to assist in demining operations throughout the Kingdom.

The deal was signed by Cambodia’s Foreign Minister Hor Namhong and Japan’s Ambassador Yuji Kumamaru and was witnessed by Prime Minister Hun Sen and Masakazu Hamachi, vice-minister of foreign affairs of Japan.

The deal will see $142 million used as part of the National Road 5 project linking Phnom Penh to the border with Thailand, while the other $39 million will be used to renovate the Chroy Changvar Bridge and to support the Cambodian Mine Action Center’s demining operations.
