Children renewing Thai passport in US, being warned that he needs to be registered in Thai address

Featured Replies

My son will be 16 soon. We are planning on going to Thailand this July and need to renew his Thai passport, he is also a US citizen too.

The embassy is saying that for his 2nd Thai passport book, he needs to put down his Thai address at his grand parents house. Does this put him into the drawing for military service for Thailand?

Thanks,

Mike

If he wants to keep getting a Thai passport he will need to be registered in a house book to get a Thai ID number if he does not have one now.

The draft would not be a concern unless he is living here full time. Living outside the country he can register to be exempted from it.

he should be on a house book somewhere ( since birth) an have a thai id

my daughter has had one since she was 14.

has he not been to Thailand for a LONG time or ever?

If he was born outside of Thailand there would be no Thai ID number or house book registration done since the birth certificate would of been issued at an embassy or official consulate.

ahhh

that's why i asked if he had been back to Thailand before or ever

Maybe try the general consulate in Chicago or LA.

1.2.2 Birth Certificate or Thai Citizenship I.D.Card/House Registration which contains the 13-digit Personal Number

1.2.5 If the applicant’s parents or legal guardian live in Thailand, they can sign the parental consent form at the Passport Division, Department of Consular Affairs, Chaengwattana Road, Bangkok. However, if they are not in the Kingdom, they must sign the parental consent form at the nearest Thai embassy or consulate-general

Same information in Chicago and LA.

How did he get his first passport? And where? Thai passports for "juveniles" are usually only 5 years validity. The boy should surely have a Thai ID card and Tabian Ban if you are interested in maintaining his Thai nationality. Bit more info needed here!

The info for passports on the embassy website is in Thai only. It appears to state the same requiemetns as the MFA website.

Embassy webpage: http://thaiembdc.org/th/%E0%B8%AB%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%AA%E0%B8%B7%E0%B8%AD%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%87/

Edit: I wonder if they were warning you that it would be the last passport they will issue to him since he will be over 20 by then. The requirements for over 20 only say an ID card or house book registration with a 13 digit ID number on it.
