A Nigerian national and his Vietnamese wife were each sentenced to 25 years in prison for shipping more than three kilograms of heroin and cocaine from Cambodia to Australia in 2014, according to court officials. The couple sent the drugs, sewn into the linings of bags, from a post office in Phnom Penh’s Dangkor district, and in addition to serving their prison terms will also pay fines of 50 million riel (about $12,500), Presiding Judge Than Leng said.

Okeke Amechi Samuel, 38, and 28-year-old Thi Nha Thuy are now being detained at Prey Sar Prison. They were initially charged with drug transportation under article 40 of the Cambodian Law on Drugs Control. “Although they both have denied committing or being related to sending the drugs via the post from Phnom Penh to Australia in 2014, based on evidence and police investigations, the court has found that both are guilty,” Mr. Leng said yesterday, reading the verdict.
