PWA assures enough water for consumption but water supply for Songkran will be cut in some areas



BANGKOK: -- The Provincial Waterworks Authority has reassured that there will be enough water for consumption to last through the dry season but water supply in some areas will have to be curtailed during Songkran festival.

PWA acting governor Mr Chumpol Chokepong-udomchai said Friday that the ongoing drought has affected PWA’s water resources in several areas forcing a cutback in water supply to consumers.

Waterwork stations at Pakthongchai in Nakhon Ratchasima, Nong Rua in Khon Kaen and Tha Tako in Nakhon Sawan have introduced water rationing whereas 17 other waterwork stations have reduced supply and five others have been affected with sea water intrusion.

However, Mr Chumpol assured that PWA would be able to supply water for consumption to consumers throughout the dry season.

To ease the current drought, he said the PWA would make use of its two billion baht budget for emergency and short-term projects which include the dredging of artesian wells and ponds for water storage, laying of water pipelines and securing new water resources.

As for the Songkran festival, Mr Chumpol said that water supply in certain areas would be cut back such as Chiang Mai where free water supply will be limited to just one point at Tha Pae Gate.

A nationwide campaign to encourage people to use water economically was launched on Friday.

There being no other water taps in Chiang Mai. An orderly queue will form at the Tha Pae Gate.

Doesn't the Gov still have loads of old rice in warehouses? Sell for 5 Baht a small bag and let people throw rice at each other as much as they want. Then the birds will swoop in and do a free clean up.

• Holiday is marked and celebrated in a responsible way given the situation.
• Water not wasted.
• Government sells some rice and reduces warehousing costs.
• Birds get fed.

Job done.

It looks to me like water supply "disaster" may be just around the corner. And I wouldn't mind betting that the government has known this for a long time and are slowly releasing bad news like this so that it doesn't come as too much of a surprise to the gullible masses who don't know any better and believe everything they say.

Of course above may mean there will be central locations where you can go fill up your water jugs...or water trucks will drive around to fill-up your water tank (if you have a tank close to a road) / spray you down for your weekly shower.
