Questions regarding traveling with dual citizenship

Featured Replies

Greetings!

I was born and raised in Sweden, but my mother is Thai, so I've had dual citizenship ever since I was a child, am now 25 years old. Previously I had only been on short trips to Thailand (less than a month) so the need to use my Thai passport when traveling was never really needed. However- I am now looking towards staying in Thailand more longterm, as in periods of up to 6 months. So, naturally using my thai passport for this would be much, much easier.

I have some questions if someone knowledgeable could assist me through the process. First off- my lastname is different in my two passports. The Swedish one has my father's last name, and the thai one has my mother's. I plan on getting this sorted out, but this is how it is for now.

I intend on booking the plane-ticket using my Thai lastname. During check-in at the Airport I'll hand them my Thai passport. That much I understand. I believe there is a passport control before entering the gate- Should I show the Swedish immigration officer my Swedish or Thai passport when departing?

Once in Thailand everything seems pretty straightforward. I'll use my Thai passport when entering the country as well as leaving. And then when I arrive back in Sweden I'll show my Swedish passport to get through immigration.

Does this seem like a plausible scenario? Also, curious if the differing last names will cause an issue. Seeing as the actual ticket will not match my Swedish passport, but only my Thai one.

Thank you in advance!

Show your Swedish passport at immigration when leaving Sweden. Otherwise, the basic plan seems sound.

Make sure you have plenty of documentation to show why you are in this strange state. In particular, have your birth certificate to show them.

My wife has dual Thai/American passports with different last names and has never had a problem. We live in Thailand so tickets are brought in Thai name. She shows both passport during airline check in and only Thai passport at immigration and of course US passport entering.

In fourty years-no issues,

Iefty
