Opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) acting president Kem Sokha defied protests outside the party’s congress on Saturday and said the “pressure” applied by the ruling party was evidence they were gaining support.

“The opponents know Cambodian people have mostly turned to support the CNRP, so they will not let us win easily. They will not let us work freely. However, our policy is national reconciliation, not holding grudges or revenge,” the acting president said during a speech at the CNRP’s 2nd National Council in Phnom Penh on Saturday. “The more we can tolerate, the more we can succeed. I believe that a majority of Cambodian people will pity us, love us, believe us, help us, join us and vote for us.”

About 20 students gathered with loudspeakers outside the congress in Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changvar district, demanding a response from the opposition leader about an alleged sex scandal. The group was confronted by security guards and CNRP activists when they started shouting. The meeting escalated into a verbal conflict, according to Chroy Changvar district police officials.
