webfact Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 CDC: MPs to have full power to elect outside prime ministerBANGKOK, 29 March 2016 (NNT) - The Constitution Drafting Commission has confirmed that members of the parliament, elected under the new charter, will have the power to choose an outsider to be the prime minister.CDC President Meechai Richupan said that the charter drafters are now doing a final check on all 279 articles of the new draft Constitution, without any plan to rewrite any key content.Mr. Meechai added that, under the new charter, the House of Representatives will have the duty to nominate three prime ministerial candidates. He said that, for the election of a non-member MP as prime minister, the House of Representatives will need support from two-thirds of members of both the Lower and Upper Houses to make it possible. However, Mr. Meechai noted that elected MPs will still be the ones able to choose an outsider as the next premier.-- NNT 2016-03-29
bark Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 OK, now that this is sorted; let all go play in the Traffic.
Paul Henry Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 This will open the door to a Dictatorship. The prime minister should be elected by the elected representatives of the people. The CDC is opening the door for the current Prime Minister to be elected by his "Friends" and then tell the people that he was elected as he is the popular choice and loved and respected by 98% of the people.Good Bye democracy in Thailand!
NongKhaiKid Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Would anyone like to make even the wildest guess as to who the the first ' outside ' PM might be ?
jesimps Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Would anyone like to make even the wildest guess as to who the the first ' outside ' PM might be ? It might be safe to guess that it won't be the people's choice ie from the red side of the political spectrum. Might also be worth a stab at an ex very very very high ranking military officer.
JAG Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 It will serve to keep a certain person at the top of the pile until a very particular job becomes vacant. Of course we are not privy to quite when that will be, so one must council observers to be patient.
tbthailand Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I laugh at all the posters who derided the Thai people as stupid and gullible for vote-buying which has been shown to not change the results of elections ... . How much simpler to appoint 250 lackeys and then buy what ever margin of MP votes is needed to put your favorite general in the PM seat.
