A recent Tesco Lotus advert shows a housemaid dropping a plate of crisps and then getting slapped across the face by her boss.

BANGKOK:-- Tesco Lotus has been forced to apologize for an advert which shows a Thai woman abusing her maid after it was slammed on social media for depicting domestic worker abuse.

The Thai-language advert, which is meant to be light-hearted and targeted at a Thai audience, shows the maid dropping a plate of crisps into the lap of her boss who then gets up and slaps the maid across the face.

But in the next scene when the boss is told by the maid that Tesco Lotus has a promotion offering huge discounts, she says to the maid “Mai pen rai,” or It’s okay.”

LOL….disgraceful advert.

Takes farangs to point it out…thats even more disgraceful.

Brings the term Ee quai to mind; they just don't get it - at the rate the mafia/juanta are effecting Thailand it's doubtful they ever will. Sad really, there are some really good people here.

She didn't even slap her. Her hand was actually about 6 inches from her face. Farangs with nothing better to do. I think they may be getting upset with all the news about Thais being outraged about this and that and don't want to be outdone.

Get a life people, It's a commercial.

I've seen much worse in commercials and programs in various other countries.

Next !!!Why would anybody get upset?

You can see her hand never touched the girl.

Too many farangs with nothing to do but complain.

Actually, I think the company is secretly promoting the controversy as it extends the life of the ad. There really is nothing to be upset about, but now we all watched the ad, get it?

Whether she hit her or not is not the point; nor is it in soap operas. The fact is that in actual as opposed to virtual life it happens regularly.

Hi-sos in palatial surroundings lording it over the great unwashed: the soaps every night are full of this kind of aristocratic-aspirational stuff - and it seems to have got noticeably worse under the current elitist regime. It obviously serves to reinforce hi-so social status but it only betrays the social divide. The whole thing is no joke and is symptomatic of something very sinister in Thai society.

They forgot the whistles and "BOIIIIING" noises, so that's why people thought it was real.

Oops, I thought it was her daughter.

The fair-skin may have contributed to my misunderstanding as maids are typically portrayed as darker-skinned (either with make-up, or by casting rural women).

Actually a funny ad. The slap was just part of the ads theme....nothing bothers you when you have your tasty snack. I should eat them while reading here on TV :)

In the thai soapseries they also don't hit the lady's real krab but it still is disgusting to see. Vely low class.

It shows the youth that violence against lady's is good and that's a bad example for them.

Tesco is full of low class bad mannered people anyway. Watch them grabbing the raw meat with bare hands and than push the cart without washing......same in Makro by the way which is the new supermarket for them.

Given the text of this report it actually seems to be justifying this sort of actions. Meant to be light-hearted and targeted at a Thai audience! I don't know. Maybe I'm putting too much meaning into it

Many farangs are outraged that anyone in the world lives without the PC values and inhibitions they learned in their home countries.

There is a place where people live and think exactly like you would like them to live and think.

I can draw them a map to the airport if it helps!whistling.gif

It would be deemed inappropriate or in poor taste in the west for the very reason that their is enough violence within the home environment without making it in adverts, Thailand is not immune , abuse and violence is well documented , and we all know just how maids get treated in some Asian countries, Indonesia banned any maids to work in HK because of abuse................................coffee1.gif .

So you're saying that it's part of Thai culture to abuse maids? It's okay and if you don't like it go home?

Just wanted to clear that up.

Your homework for tonight is to get an English dictionary and look up the words 'funny' and 'actor'. Then apologise to funny people and actors.

I don't really know what to make of that advert. It's scary to make light at hitting your maid. If people see it enough, they'll just think it's socially acceptable. Like some of our 'farang' friends on here who would appear to love nothing more than to go and hit their maids without judgement from others.
