Fishermen in Thai waters urged to obtain fishing licenses

BANGKOK, 1 April 2016 (NNT) – The Department of Fisheries is calling upon fishermen to urgently obtain fishing licenses in order to legally fish in Thai waters, said Agriculture Minister Chatchai Sarikulya.

He has revealed 10,666 fishery operators had requested for fishing licenses from among a total of 11,237 fishing vessels categorized into 10 types of fishing equipment, which are legally allowed to operate under special conditions.

The vessels are required to operate only either in the Gulf of Thailand or the Andaman Sea according to their respective Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) to ensure sustainability of the Kingdom's marine resources.

From April 1, 2016, all fishing vessels will be required to bear proper licenses in order to fish in the Thai waters. All fishermen who have requested for their fishing licenses are encouraged to contact the district fisheries offices where they had made their requests to obtain the licenses. These fishing licenses will expire after a two-years time.

Unauthorized fishing activities in Thai waters after April 1, 2016 will result in criminal charges and an administrative punishment, according to the Royal Ordinance on Fisheries 2015.

I was under the impression that this was already done.

and they wonder why their fishing stocks are being decimated, 10,666 dont have licences, what a joke, maybe if the govt actually had inspectors that did their jobs this wouldnt happen. So much for them having it all under control last year, one huge stuff up after another.

Yes, please urge the fisherman gently...they are delicate creatures.

NNT strikes again. The article fails to mention how many licenses have actually been issued.

Those crackerjack reporters at NNT are an incurious lot.
