A lot of servers seem to have problems recently.

I use Maxnet as well, ADSL, sometimes it's just agonising slow, if you wait for pages to load, you might as well start learning a different language during the waiting time.

I use Maxnet as well, ADSL, sometimes it's just agonising slow, if you wait for pages to load, you might as well start learning a different language during the waiting time.

My modem and phone line at home (samui, lamai) work much faster than my friend's ADSL connections here.

Problem with ADSL is that, even though it is a newer and in theory faster protocol than ISDN the infrastructure just ain't there. Samui connects via ADSL nodes in Surat and there are not enough nodes, the cabling is poor, the technicians attending to the system appear to be far and few between.

The ISPs routinely oversell their services. If they have enough bandwidth to service 1,000 clients properly they simply proceed to sell 10,000 connections on the very false assumption that not all users will connect all at the same time. Sadly this is exactly what happens and then you have major traffic jam on the already overcrowded bandwidth.

If you can get it then ISDN is generally faster, even though the protocol is in theory slower, the infrastructure is older and more established.

There is no good internet broadband on Samui unless you are fortunate enough to have an office at the IT Complex which has an extremely fast broadband connection but only for those phyically in their building.

In addition to the overselling of limited bandwidth you have the associated problem of very poor phone and cable systems.

Sattellite internet connections are not too bad but are effected by sunspots, electric storms, electromagnetic fluctuations and buffalos farting.

Air cards are good but you can only use GPRS here as the Edge technology is not available yet in the south (only in Bkk I think)

Some lucky folk are within line-of-eye of a wireless router and pick up good speeds via wireless. A few companies on Samui offer such wireless, but as noted you need to be within line-of-eye to use it properly.

Like I said, for most intents and purposes there is no efficient broadband generally available to the public on Samui.

*Get 2 empty baked bean cans.

*Clean them out well.

*Make a hole in the bottom of each.

*Connect them together with about 20 meters of good white string.

*Rub the string down with rosin.

*There you go, the best connection you will get here short of the IT Complex in Lamai.

Cheers

I've got Maxnet, because there's not simply no other option here. The second it starts raining my connection will go down. What's that about? Satellite connection? If we had that in England we wouldn't have much online time...
