Cambodia’s controversial ambassador to South Korea, Suth Dina, remained in detainment over corruption allegations after more than a day of questioning, Anti-Corruption Unit President Om Yentieng said yesterday. He will be sent to court tomorrow.

The ACU began questioning Mr. Dina yesterday morning, however it remains unclear specifically what Mr. Dina is accused of. The Cambodian Embassy in South Korea has been dogged by rumors of corruption after South Korean officials found migrant workers with service passports, which are only given to officials traveling for government business.

“We will take one or two cases to charge him, but I cannot say yet, as it is the prosecutor’s job. Only the prosecutor can say what he will be charged with,” Mr. Yentieng said.

Mr. Dina returned to Cambodia on Sunday after an investigation was carried out regarding his spending due to complaints from officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as Cambodian workers living in South Korea.

Yesterday, during a ceremony marking the opening of a new Phnom Penh City Hall administrative building, Prime Minister Hun Sen took aim at corrupt officials. He said it was possible the government’s bad eggs were from opposition parties, and called for the arrest of those officials.

“Among 3 to 4 thousands officials, there are only four to five bad officials. We know that they come from other political parties. There won’t be more wicked officials than righteous officials,” he said.
