Department of Land Transport encourages businesses to install cameras facing the front view of their vehicles

BANGKOK, 7 April 2016 (NNT) - The Department of Land Transport has introduced a GPS system to track public buses as well as CCTV cameras for transparency.

The department will also encourage businesses to install cameras facing the front view of their vehicles by making the purchase of such a camera tax-deductible.

Deputy Minister of Transport Aomsin Shiwapruek officiated at the opening of the GPS operations center which will oversee GPS information from all vehicles for real-time monitoring of drivers. Any anomalies in behavior or driving speed will be immediately made known to the center.

The public will be able to file complaints to the center through the mobile application “DLT GPS”

In addition, the Department of Land Transport has encouraged businesses to attach front-facing cameras to their service vehicles to monitor road behavior in a bid to reduce road accidents. Businesses will be able to claim the purchases of the cameras for tax deductions.

cameras facing the front view of vehicles?

Their English is a bit off I believe, as it would mean a back dashboard camera (selfie style)! Wouldn't it just be dashboard cameras?

So let me get this straight: from this GPS operations center they will be able to monitor the driving behavior of these vehicles? With other words, when you go through a red light, speed, or pass another car where it is not allowed they will see it and maybe in the future give you a traffic fine for it. That seems like a huge risk for the driver as he has a lot to lose.

What does he get in return? The purchasing price of the camera is tax-deductible?

So basically you are opening yourself up for a huge amount of traffic fines and in return you get a free dashcam?

Seems like an extremely bad deal to me.

Might be smarter to buy a dashcam yourself for 1,000 baht and only show the footage to the police when you the other person was at fault.

Considering that half of the people here on TV don't know what a Tachograph is,

don't expect any Thai to be able to analyse one of those disks. facepalm.gif

The English translation is a bit eroneous, which sometimes happens when someone who has relatively good (but not perfect) translation skills overthinks a translation, using a descriptive sentence rather than a simple word. Clearly a front facing dashcam is meant, but the writer probably isn't familiar with that term.

Have you got it straight yet?

No one is opening themselves up for anything or running huge risks of fines. There are two separate subject here, GPS monitoring of public vehicles and a suggestion that business install dash cams. There is no connection between the two.

For 'tax deductible' = 'free' you would have to be on 100% marginal tax.

Here's another idea; breathalyse all PSV and HGV and taxi drivers every day when they report for their shifts and conduct regular drugs tests. weed out the ones that fail. Organisations that have done this have seen a marked improvement in driving performance from the remaining drivers.

Also put a large notice on the back of all buses with a free number to text if the public observe erratic behaviour, and FOLLOW UP on the texts. (hopefully wouldn't result in driving and texting accidents!)

Half the people on TV knowing what a Tachograph is, is being overly generous. Clearly as some people have difficulty telling the difference between Dash Cam and a GPS (Sat Nav).

I've no doubt you're right but I can see the idea of continuous selfies whilst driving would appeal to many.

I was wondering if this will apply to police vehicles, assuming they don't have them already. It would be a good idea to have both. Front facing to monitor driving and selfies to check use of seat belts and helmets and number of passengers on bikes.

Well I definitely know what one is. You see them a lot on tv adverts for cars and pickups. It's a dial on the dash that has to spin wildly into the red every time you change gear apparently.

To save anyone trying to educate me I do have a basic knowledge of what a tachograph is.

Slightly off topic I saw a video promoting a car on my return to Thailand a couple of days ago. I didn't think anything could be more worrying than those ads for pickups showing guys racing around and drifting though corners until I saw the one for the Corolla Altis. The weapon of choice of the Thai taxi driver.?
