old fashioned barber shop

I spent a good deal of time in the mideast where men had a huge choice of salons and barber shops for almost daily hair and beard grooming. I've been looking in Chiang Mai for a similar shop who can attend to giving a hair cut the "old fashion" way. i.e. neck and head message. hair and beard done by scissors and comb with little use of electric trimming machine

They are all over the place, just tell them what you want.

Not entirely true. I tried that and he proceeded to shave my neck with a straight edge razor and NO shave cream.

Did you explain clearly and in detail what you wanted in Thai before you sat down? Did he clearly agree to it all?

Aren't there any universally accepted rules while cutting hair. I'm looking for a barber who will know how to professionally cut hair with a contract

I have not traveled the world over but a contract to cut hair professionally. Personally I just go to a place that cuts my hair like I like it. Could care less if it is done professionally I am only interested in the final product.

I think you would have to pay extra for the massage. I have had them spend maybe 30 seconds on my shoulders. That was it.

If you are using what they used to call, a gentlemen hairdresser, then you need to speak some Thai. Otherwise it`s the expensive fancy hairdressers in the town or the malls.

I used to treat myself to a turkish barber shop shave when I was living in Holland, the full hot towels, steam, great lather, and a shave so smooth.. Finished with a turkish coffee and off to work.. Of course Turks have hair like I do so no wonder they understand.

I tried many times to get a good shave service here.. One in Patong could just about do it, no better than I do at home when I take the time to strop the straight to a really fine edge.. But others were clueless.. One gay guy in Samui, with a snapped half a razor blade nicked and cut me so much I ended up quitting and leaving half shaved to finish it off myself.

I get it, on average Thais are not as hairy and rarely have the kind of think beards we do.. Gave up trying as it wasnt the luxury experience that a great barber can give.

I have had good luck with barber shops all around Chiang Mai. Good haircut, shave, face towels and neck and shoulder massage. 60 baht to 100 baht. There are so many. If you don't like one, go to another the next time.

I've been going to "LANA BARBER SHOP" in Chiang Mai Land for past 5 years.

Don't ask me the name of the guy, he has the SECOND Chair as you enter the shop. My wife does all the negotiating. Quite Inexpensive and an excellent job. Prices are Listed on the Wall, alongside his Mirror. I always give him a 20-Baht Tip. (Wife says that is ENOUGH!)

Don't get confused with another "more modern" looking Unisex Hair Salon a couple of doors further down near the 7/11.

Try Sunshine Barbers

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sunshine-Barber-Shop/133007223573424

Specialises in Western style cuts, and speaks good English so you'll be able to communicate exactly what you want. Charges are a little higher than the average Thai shop but worth it for the quality of service.

As Thailand is a desert when it comes to decent shave supplies.. One great guy to deal with is

http://www.siamwetshave.com/en/

I stock up on soaps on trips back but any time am short here, or need high quality DE blades (which I cant find in town only the feather basics) hes the guy.

Keep meaning to try a shavette too as its actually hard work keeping a straight in condition. Pain in the ass to fly with.

Thanks so much for the suggestion . went there today and was very satisfied. Haircut I would say 8.5 of 10 and a shave 9.5 out of 10. I'll go back
