Sampalang (สำปะหลัง)

Featured Replies

Would the following both mean the root of the cassava plant, or do they distinguish between the plant and the tuber:

SAMPALANG (สำปะหลัง)

MAN SAMPALANG (มันสำปะหลัง)

Thank you for your help.

I think it is similar to

พืช มันฝรั่ง which is the potato plant, while มัน refers to the tuber. A tuber, however, I think is หัวใต้ดินของพืช.

Dear xeno n proud,

Thank you for your reply, however my Thai reading ability is not very advanced.

Thanks laolover88,

Yes, I was thinking the same thing, but was also considering that SAMPALANG was just an abbreviation and also referred to the tuber, considering that is really the only part of that plant which is used (as far as I know).

Thai Food Ingredient:

Cassava,

มันสำปะหลัง man sampalang

Tapioca

Dear evilbxxx.

Thank you for your mail, but that site seems to refer to a particular dish and does not exactly mention what MAN SAMPALANG means. It is not clear, but it seems to mean that MAN SAMPALANG refers to the tubers, which I understand, but what I am asking is does SAMPALANG refer to the tubers only, or the tubers and the plant.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks evilebxxx,

I think sufficient information has been provided and I will close this subject.

Rather curiously สำปะหลัง does not refer to the plant, it actually refers to the tuber. มันสำปะหลัง would therefore appear to be tautologous.

From the RID:

สำปะหลัง น. ชื่อมันชนิด Manihot esculenta Crantz ในวงศ์ Euphorbiaceae
SAM PALANG (Noun) The name of one type of tuber of Manihot esculentz Crantz in the family Euphorbiaceae

Dear Oxx,

Thank you for confirming that for me. I am surprised to hear that it does not refer to the plant.

Much appreciated.
