Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, head of the Democrat Party speaks to reporters February 17 2016, at the Appeals Court in Bangkok.

BANGKOK — Some opponents to the junta-sponsored draft charter want the Democrat Party to clearly state whether the party plans to endorse or reject the charter draft.

The calls come after Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva held a press conference on Sunday to say the draft charter would bring about a retreat in democracy. However, Abhisit stopped short of committing whether he and the party would resolve to vote to reject the charter draft during the referendum on August 7 or not.

Walking along the road to democracy

suddenly the road narrows and becomes a footpath,

reducing further to become a tight rope

the draft charter is released,

suddenly your tight rope

becomes a balancing act

on dental floss.

dammed if you do and dammed if you don't,

nothing like watching

a true Thai soap opera.

"However, Abhisit stopped short of committing whether he and the party would resolve to vote to reject the charter draft during the referendum on August 7 or not"

Sensible man. Clearly doesn't want to be gaoled for 10 years.

However his statement about a retreat in democracy would seem to be a fairly clear condemnation.

When men like him are suggesting in a very subtle way opposition to the charter it is time for all to know the truth.

Democracy isn't being served in this proposal .

It's a substitute that is rubbery at best.

The very fact they seemingly threaten him is indicative of their tightening of controls.

The pretence is all but gone.

The propaganda line that "messing with us is anti Thailand "" is straight out of the Chinese communist text books.

Of course they don't represent Thailand at all .

Even with invites as an interim government formed.

Yes faith was placed by international hosts they would return democracy.

But as they are unelected they have nil mandate and tampering with elections will only get them into hot water in the long run.

Once both sides go after these guys ( the military ) its game on.

Backed by a billionaire and Nations , sanctions , and the odd general the clock is ticking.

Might take 5 years for the people to on mass rebel .

Or silently one night a second coup.?

But the Thais will eventually rise from the current submission if they see even elitist leaders of prior disagree.

The military might adjust this mans attitude.

But it won't be long before warnings apply on this Nation

Just show just how much credibility Ahbisit has in the eyes of many. Just one misstep in politics will come back to haunt him forever. No one trust a chameleon. Even with his full display of charter criticism in front of the media is not enough to placate the public. They boxing him in to make a clear stance and statement. Doubt he will and more distrust of this man.

Where is Suthep as of late? He has been unusually quiet over the past two months. Probably second guessing his deal with the general no doubt.

Abhisit concerned about a retreat in democracy?

Not a REAL problem to Abhisit so long as he's sure of being elected or appointed as the next PM.

I don't believe he cares about whatever system of government Thailand has so long as he's in the ring of power.

If Abhisit ever cared about human rights for the Thai people as he cared about himself, he could become a great Thai leader. wai2.gif

With a name brand such as the Democratic party one would assume that this party would promote Democracy ,however the people of Thailand by now should see the position it has got itself into with Thai Democracy, and start some sort of an effort into establishing a meaningful Democracy, a half glass full of democracy not always means that it will work, vital checks and balances left out can and did destroy the Thai democracy, which Prayut is now using to full advantage..........................coffee1.gif

It's a wonder Mark has got any forelock left with all that tugging.....

Off course Eric the red takes this mistaken view. It's exactly what one would expect of him. General advice is to look beyond prejudiced opinions.

What's mistaken about it and how exactly is he off course?

The story is based upon the views of PT and the student who is standing against the charter (was he the chap who ate sandwiched as a protest) neither of whom are friends of Ahbisits.

It is they who are boxing him in and their views are slanted towards their own agendas. Part of which is to discredit their opposition.

All their opposition, military and civilian.

Ahbisit has made clear his criticisms of the charter.
