Toyota vs Bollards....but the driver lives to tell the tale

KANCHANABURI: -- A driver had a lucky escape Tuesday night when he rolled his Toyota at a notorious accident blackspot in downtown Kanchanaburi.

Pongchai Muangcharoen, 21, was taken to hospital but is expected to survive after colliding with a pile of concrete bollards on the footpath outside a man's home, Daily News reports.

The accident happened at 11.30 pm on the Saeng Chuto road.

Homeowner Attapon Opatpatamarat, 31, said there were frequent accidents outside his property. He blamed the design of the road at that point that caused unwary drivers to take the corner incorrectly.

He called for the authorities to change the design of the central reservation to prevent accidents.

If it was a notorious blackspot for accidents then why hasn't anything been done like_ I don't know_ maybe add some <deleted> lighting? If it was me and my accident and I learned this place was notoriously famous for accidents due to a blackspot? I would be hiring a <deleted> lawyer to sue the local BIB and road maintenance office for failure to upkeep and provide a safe road. This guy may have been lucky, this time! But what about the others before and after him. Pathetic nothing has been done about this. And they wonder why their are so many accidents and road deaths

At times it seems many of the design of roads, work being done on them, etc were designed /inspected by those who flunked out of clay modeling in grade school. Then to really confuse the drivers who are attempting to get to a destination they have to contend with the absense of adequate warning to hazards ahead. If there is any forwarning ( a tree branch on the shoulder or upright in a pothole)

I think of the grim reaper marking a spot for the coffin makers, although the latter need no assistence. their work is in constent demand.

yesterday evening, coming back from Lotasss Sawang Daen Din to my house on rd 22 ; there are two continue yellow lines and not visibility for overpassing a normal vehicle - 60 to 80 km/h - but many crazy drivers did that ...

That's a load of bollards. Isn't it more likely the 21 year old driver was driving a little too fast in an area where a little caution should have been used? Road conditions etc?

Gonna have a flat battery in the morning leaving the headlights on like that.

Still the max speed will be 80 km/h for cars in downtown cities in Thailand, we will have that kind of crazy accidents;

In France and everywhere in other occidental countries it's 50 km/h maximum and 30 km/h where there are schools

I went many times in Great Britain where it's the same 30 miles an hour in downtown and 20 miles where children or narrow roads ...

I know thai people have troubles with maths or arithmetics ..

how many meters do you need to stop with a normal car on dry road when driving at 30 km/h ? ( the answer is 23 meters ; enough to kill many pedestrians )

This particular spot has not seen any deaths, never mind the "so many" that you refer to.

Off course they do that: all the time and every day. That's because they don't know what the lines are for. That's because they do not have to take a proper driving test and are ill-trained. Land of the Kwais.

Next time you're in Bangkok drive south past Central Ladprao (Wiphawadi rd) and take the Saphan Kwaai flyover turnoff...before you know it your car will be straddling the white lines and you'll be in 2 lanes...''why?'' you ask: because the phahonyothin lanes have been repainted and nobody checked if they lined up. Seriously...I'm not talking the usual 10cm new line jump...the linea move 1m

Double continuous yellow lines in Thailand are foor the looks broken lines are for saving paint.

The connector road RR-7 to 331 has these yellow lines but the workers busses to Amata and Bovin industrial areas just drive three and four taking up all four lanes of the road. Finally after several accidents it must have dawned on the BIBs the only way to control this to make them stay on their side of the road is construct a reinforced concrete wall cemented into the ground and that is what they are constructing now, of course now it is Songkran so all the workers have gone home to Isan to get drunk on their local brewed fire water. I hope they do not forget were their last job was so they will finish the reinforced concrete wall.

To stop this daily carnage on Thai roads all roads in Thailand must have reinforced concrete wall, not these 1-ton cement blocks you see because at the speed they drive these 1-ton blocks are just knocked out of the way into the path of oncoming vehicles on the other side of the road. Cementing them INTO the ground is the only answer.

Drive to the conditions.... what is appropriate for the situation you are in... not that hard to understand

I thought you might say that you would pay to have some lighting installed or some flashing lights to warn people, instead of wasting money on trying to sue ????

Thais are simply unable to stop being lazy and drive on the right side of the road, I can follow any car by me down the country roads which are pretty wide and guarantee that EVERY corner they will get ALL 4 wheels over the other side of the central yellow line in the road.

This is followed by the usual last minute panic swerve as another car comes the other way in many cases.

The sooner they stop this practice the sooner these accidents will cease.

Are you saying that Thais driving on the right side of the road are wrong? If they drove on the left would that then be right, in your opinion?

Reminds me of years ago I forget Pattaya or Bkk, an old road totally rebuilt, a young engineer supervising the painting etc., of a pedestrian crossing. Local asks what is this, what's it for? Young engineer says 'Ohh no meaning, I want to put this here because it looks nice and makes the road look professional, just like the movies'.
