New deaths reported as Japan is hit by second powerful quake in less than 24 hours

Less than 24 hours after being struck by a big quake that claimed the lives of at least nine people, the southwest of Japan has been hit again.

A magnitude 7.3 quake has struck the same area where more than a thousand people were injured in a tremor on Thursday.

At least three people are reported to have died in the new quake and hundreds more injured.

Saturday’s quake also triggered a tsunami warning but it was later lifted.

One resident told reporters: “It was just when I was trying to fall asleep, and I saw on my iPad that it was 6-plus, and I was very surprised.”

Aftershocks have continued in the region.

Japan’s nuclear watchdog says no problems have been reported with local power plants.

Fresh damage has been reported from the new quake, with already-damaged buildings coming down.

Thursday’s quake had a magnitude of 6.4.

This large and powerful earth quake must have been very scary for

the people who live near the area where it struck. I hope the after shocks are not

too powerful, and the people can recover okay from this event.

It looks pretty devastating from the few pictures and video I have seen

so far.
