Criminal cases decreased by 10 percent, but the death toll increased over the four days of this year’s Khmer New Year holiday compared with the same period last year, according to a General Commissariat report released yesterday. More than 400 illegal Cambodian migrant workers were also deported from Thailand during the celebration, the report said.

Twenty-seven criminal cases were reported across the Kingdom’s 25 provinces. The capital saw a decrease in reported crimes of 10 percent compared with the same period a year ago, when it had 30 cases. Five people were killed in various circumstances, while 23 were injured this year, according to the report.

Authorities cracked down on 22 of 27 cases, detaining 26 suspects, or 81 percent of the total cases, the report said. Authorities also tackled eight drug cases with 16 suspects detained. A total of 29 alleged gangsters were also detained and five were sent to court during the holiday.
