Watana Muangsook, who served in the former Pheu Thai led government, is escorted into the military court Thursday in Bangkok

BANGKOK — Activists today canceled daily protests demanding the release of Pheu Thai politico Watana Muangsook from military detention after a martial court released him on bail this afternoon.

After spending three days in army custody, Watana was brought to the military court in Bangkok on Thursday afternoon where he was charged with violating the junta’s ban on protests. The 59-year-old veteran politician was subsequently released on a bond of 80,000 baht.

Watana released on bail after he was given 12-day detention

BANGKOK: -- Former commerce minister Watana Muangsook was released on a 80,000 baht bail on Thursday after the Bangkok Military Court ordered him detained for another 12 days as requested by the police enquiry officer.

The Pheu Thai party’s core member was escorted to the court by the police enquiry officer in charge of the case against him asked the court to have him detained for another period of 12 days claiming that he needs to question five more witnesses. He was accompanied by his lawyer, Mr Narinpong Chinapak and several former Pheu Thai MPs who included Kittirat na Ranong, Chaturon Chaisaeng, Worachai Hema and Thanusak Lek-thai.

Mr Watana was charged with defying Order No 39/2557 of the National Council for Peace and Order.

The former commerce minister rejected the police enquiry officer’s request for the extension of his detention period claiming his detention by the military was illegal because he merely exercised his right to free expressions and he has never tried to escape.

The court decided to detain Mr Watana for another 12 days as requested by the enquiry officer but allowed to set him free on 80,000 baht bail under the condition that he must refrain from doing anything which is deemed to be inciting, provoking or persuading other people to demonstrate in a way which may cause disturbances in the country.

A big thanks to the wise military for keeping the peace in releasing the man with no need for protesters to come out.

That's always a fear isn't it?

Why those protesters might be filmed and their number swell and the government appear to loose control.

Imagine a very large protest and violence ?

What could this lead to?

Again well done keeping these situations only a possibility not an eventuality for now.

The western countries who are pretending they care about the human rights have been relieved their nations have no footage of shootings and army soldiers roughing up protesters .

It makes the politics easier.

Lets see how long you can keep this up for.?

Because the other side will quietly push the envelope more.

And eventually one. Brave soul will die in the name of democracy and truth and freedom of speech and a camera record the event.

Then the flood gates will open

Would like to know the comments by ambassadors/diplomats from Australia, NZ, USA, UK, France Europe,,,,,,,,too the country regarding military incarceration of a civilian due to expression of opinion on Facebook.

The world is very slack on this, regularly LoS makes statements on behalf of other countries and how supportive they are, understand the so called road map and other such BS but they never get taken to task.

Sorry Mr. Watana but your breathing has caused disturbance within the country.

Please either cease breathing or immediately return to custody. wai2.gif

facepalm.gifBond against what? Unlawful incarceration? PR face won this time whistling.gif

Forgot already? Under the Junta's article 44 there is no such thing as "unlawful incarceration".

When you're stood behind huge great guns the law is whatever you say it is.

Frankly I'm ashamed of the US and Europe over this. As far as I know, there hasn't been a peep of protest over what is obviously a major human rights violation.
