PM pleased with development of Thailand’s competitive edge

BANGKOK, 22 April 2016 (NNT) – Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has expressed satisfaction with the success of related agencies in enhancing the competitive edge of Thailand in all dimensions.

A meeting of the National Committee on Competitive Advantage was chaired by Prime Minister Prayut, with an aim to follow up on the committee’s work progress in developing the country in all areas, ranging from economics, human resources and public administration to information management and public relations.

The premier acknowledged all the improvements made so far and said he was contented. He affirmed that the enhancement of competitiveness, coupled with the facilitation of investment, will be beneficial for Thailand while conceding that the ranking of the country will depend on the consideration of each agency.

In 2015, IMD placed Thailand at number 30 in terms of economic competitiveness out of 61 countries, down from the previous year’s standing at 29. The World Economic Forum also brought down the ranking of Thai education quality from 31 to 32. On the other hand, the World Bank ranked Thailand 46th on the ease of doing business, up from the 49th place previously.

How can one become so competitive when their english proficiency, lack of worldliness and flagging by the international moral and business standards groups is so poor compared to their ASEAN partners?

I know of no "smart money" being invested in Thailand.

The Thai GDP speaks for itself. Just recently revised downwards to less than 2%. Compared to Vietnam for example 7%.

I think the pills are diet pills. He is looking rather boyishly thin these days. That or he is not eating right. Thais are good to work with, but easier to do so outside of Thailand these days.

Seems like a high likelihood that the whole press release is misdirection, to divert attention away from the stupid things this man says and does because, like all Thais I've ever met, he engages his emotions before he engages his brain.

Readers may want to consider the narrative here. In our globalized world, being 'competive' is all very well, but when there is excess production capacity, as happens periodically in our economic system, we all suffer.

That's what has happened. Currently China is busy undercutting prices of steel all over the world to rid themselves of excess inventory. There will be similar effects in other industries.

In an attempt to maintain profits in a period of declining consumption, corporations will slash wages, and capital will circle the world looking for the cheapest labor. Some will do very well in this system, and many will suffer greatly in ways we cannot imagine. One's 'competitive ranking' may be of little benefit.

It will be an interesting ride down the escalator for many of us. What to do... ? Maybe hang on to our hats... and adapt as best we can... while trying to work out a more just and equitable future for our grandkids... if that is possible.

The rankings of 'competitiveness' I tend to take with a large grain of salt, while trying to be mindful of who exactly is concocting them, and for what purpose.

No, it's about having the blade of your rifle bayonet sharper than those whose opinion differs from your own.

Everything they say and do is a misdirection. They know it, we know, everyone knows it except a few misguided foreign rednecks and a handful of middle-aged flag wavers whose husbands are busy working.

Using a bayonet involves getting very close ( dangerously close) to what is likely to be a very annoyed enemy who is equally likely to try to make a mess of you.

Coupled with record levels of bad debt domestically according to bank reports this week. The economy remains competitively stuffed and getting worse.

No progress, just more committees. Not all activity is progress, often, the objective is to create the illusion of progress while actually making no changes whatever.

According to The Center for International Trade Studies in January 2016, Thailand's wholesale and retail markets are expected to grow in 2016 by just 1% and 10% for the next five years or 2% average per year.

That's competitive failure.

They are SERIOUSLY lagging behind Vietnam who ARE on the rise because they have realised the importance of opening up for trade. You can now as a foreigner, legally buy a house and land in Vietnam and get a visa for it.
