Foreign construction companies were warned not to violate Cambodia’s building laws during a meeting yesterday to review a number of projects that had been approved by the government. Chea Sophara, the Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, approved 47 projects submitted to his ministry from 2014-2015 and held a meeting yesterday to review the projects.

Mr. Sophara also warned foreign companies about violating the Kingdom’s construction regulations and said he would have letters sent to relevant embassies making the transgressions of some companies known. More than 69 projects were initially submitted to Mr. Sophara’s ministry, he said, but 22 lacked the required legal paperwork. The minister also announced a commission would be set up in order to regulate construction sites.

“For all foreign companies that are violating construction laws, the ministry will send a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking them to send a diplomatic note the embassy of the company in question in order to give a warning to that company,” Mr. Sophara said. He added that his ministry would ensure the heights of proposed factory projects allowed for sufficient airflow within them, and that factories’ front doors adhere to standards to prevent “incidents” and to avoid traffic jams and accidents in the streets in front of them.
