Paris climate accord is signed by record 175 countries

As Earth Day was being observed around the planet on Friday, a record number of 175 countries signed the historic Paris accord to slow global warming.

Both China and the United States, the world’s top producers of greenhouse gas emissions, pledged to formally adopt the deal by the end of the year, raising the prospect of it being enforced much faster than anticipated.

US Secretary of State John Kerry brought his young granddaughter along to the signing ceremony at UN headquarters in New York, sitting her on his knee as he put pen to paper, in a symbolic gesture to stress the pact’s importance for future generations.

It was the biggest ever day one endorsement of a global agreement.

For French President Francois Hollande, who hosted the talks in the wake of last November’s terror attacks, this was a moment of satisfaction.

“Never in the history of the UN has it been possible to bring together 170 states to sign an agreement,” he said.

“So this is now more than a commitment. This will be a text irreversibly written into international law.”

There was, however, a warning from film star Leonardo Di Caprio, who has been designated a UN Messenger of Peace with a special focus on climate change.

“We can congratulate each other today, but it will mean absolutely nothing if you return to your countries and fail to push beyond the promises of this historic agreement,” he said.

“Now is the time for bold, unprecedented action”.

Many countries still need a parliamentary vote to formally approve the deal, which commits nations to restraining the global rise in temperatures to “well below” 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

But even if the pact is fully implemented, promised greenhouse gas cuts are insufficient to limit warming to an agreed maximum, the United Nations says.

The sense of urgency is heightened by the statistics.

The first three months of 2016 have broken temperature records and 2015 was the planet’s warmest year since records began in the 19th century, with heat waves, droughts and rising sea levels.

Such a relief, I was worried the spate of bombing attacks and mass murders through northern Europe was going to interfere with this climate change summit. The bombing attacks carried out by a well known terrorist cult is readily identifiable and could be quickly and permanently remedied if needed - making proper countries citizens happy and relieved. Climate change of course may or may not be occurring, and if it is occurring there is no evidence that man's activities have anything whatsoever to do with the climate change that may or may not even be occurring anyway. It is difficult to draw conclusions from cyclical natural patterns that have a large element of random and chaos. I can see why our politicians are so pleased with themselves this week.

Ah yes another earth day. It is amazing how we have survived this long. Here are seven of the doom and gloom predictions made on the first earth day by esteemed professors and scientists.

“Civilization Will End Within 15 or 30 Years.”
Harvard biologist Dr. George Wald warned shortly before the first Earth Day in 1970 that civilization would soon end “unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.” Three years before his projection, Wald was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.

Harvard graduate and Nobel Prize winner...The guy must have been a real slacker.

The Republicans that represent the polluters are obviously right and the scientists are just playing games.blink.png

As a postdoctoral researcher, Wald discovered that vitamin A was a component of the retina. His further experiments showed that when the pigment rhodopsin was exposed to light, it yielded the protein opsin and a compound containing vitamin A. This suggested that vitamin A was essential in retinal function.

It IS a hoax, and I'm relieved that it's not a binding agreement. This is a total flop for the warmists, trying to impose increased costs of energy to the developing world and especially Asia.

The most accurate portrayal and summation of global warming I have seen was on the South Park episode featuring Al Gore and manbearpig. Incredible that a cartoon could completely explain the business of global warming so succinctly and without even trying!

Yeah climate is not changing, human action and his impact on natural cycles ate minimal : they didnt consume nearly 50%of the earth natural resource. There is no impact on the fauna, we don t waste chemical, we do not pollute.. this has zero impact whatsoever...

I've told you a million times, stop exaggerating. Look at man's ego - he is so important and significant that he can even change the weather. Bravo.

Uh, they watch FOX and still think it's a hoax?

The FOX News Channel is a hoax, by virtue of its own existence!

Yeah on the phone so types a bit too fast. The human ressources available per year is consumed faster than produced: for 2016 the human consumed already 50% of a sustainable ressource which should occur half of the year.

Anyway if tou really believe human actions has no effect on weather and "natural cycles" even aftrr millions of facts in millions of fields (pollution, fauna, modification of landscapes with dams and other things, invasive species...) i seriously doubt we can have more discussion.. just go in your backyard burn some plastic bags, spill some oil in the river nearby..do something fun mate! Enjoy a trip to fukushina bay, go have a dive in the gange river, eat some dodo (oh no we ate them all.already) or hunt some tigers

Pollute pollute pollute it is a ntural cyclel, there will have no impact....

Apparently they were at a Creationist Symposium.

I too have noticed the climate change deniers are usually the type to tell you God created earth in 6 days.

These gullible people usually get their news from FOX and claim every other news source is mainstream liberal nonsense.

And so if the earth's human population is consuming it's natural resources at an unsustainable rate it's because we humans are reproducing at an unsustainable rate. Everything else is a consequence of that fact.

Do nothing to reduce CO2 pollution the Earth will demonstrate very swiftly just how unsustainable and inhospitable the Earth can be for the Human Race.

Global warming / Climate Change is based on science. Religion is based on a belief. The antithesis of each other.

'a Denier' is a person who ignores the science and accepts the non science, misinformation Fossil Fuel propaganda as fact.

I think you have hitched the horse to the wrong end of the cart, twice.

Smacks of stupidity, is more like it when you ignore the worldwide scientific community and side with the politicians & lawyers that represent the business interests of the major polluters.

The COP21 Paris Agreement didn't open for signing until April 22, 2016 and will be open for signing for one year.

Seeing that last year that 195 member countries plus the institution of the EU as the 196th member unanimously agreed to the terms of the Paris Agreement, the remaining 18 are expected to also sign.

Yeeeah...so climate change is a global conspiracy without a shred of evidence? Even when the vast majority of climate scientists (you know, the people who actually study this stuff) agree. Not to mention scientists other than climate like Richard Dawkins...Stephen Hawking...Neil DeGrasse Tyson...Jerry Coyne...Phil Plait...Lawrence Krauss...Cara Santa Maria and on and on and on...

'Climate change of course may or may not be occurring'...

...kinda like saying smoking may or may not cause cancer...obesity and high fat, low fiber diets may or may not lead to heart disease...evolution may or may not be a fact...drunk driving may or may not be dangerous...secondhand smoke may or may not be harmful...and on and on and on...

Conspiracy Theorist much??? bah.gif
