Human skeletons among piles of skeletons collected from forest in Udon Thani



BANGKOK: -- The Institute of Forensic Medicine has now confirmed that human skeletons were among piles of skeletons collected from more than 20 locations within the degraded forest areas of Ban Pheu district of Udon Thani province.

Head of the Royal Thai Police’s Forensic Medicine Pol Maj Dr Pornchai Suthirakun disclosed today that DNA tests on skeletons collected from 20 places at the forest areas of Ban Kambon Viengchai in Tambon Nongwaeng of Ban Pheu district initially proved human skeletons were among these skeletons.

He said as there are large piles of skeletons to be tested and many had been burnt and extremely dried, it needed more time to differentiate all of them from animal bones.

But since human skeletons are among these bones, he has asked the forensic police to send DNA samples from those who earlier reported their relatives went missing for laboratory test if they match the skeletons found, he said.

So far 11 people have filed complaints with Udon Thani police their their relatives went missing for years, and they suspected the skeletons found at over 20 locations in the forest area in Ban Pheu might belong to their missing relatives.

Earlier Provincial Police Region Four commissioner Pol Lt General Boonlert Jaipradit said that bone pieces found in the forest might have been burned to cover up crime by their killers.

Locals alerted police about human skeletons after they came across in the forest zone.

Bone pieces became visible partly because bushes and weeds withered under the scorching sun during the drought and ongoing hot weather.

After the alert, team of police and doctors from Ban Pheu Hospital inspected 15 locations where there were signs of burning.

Evidences collected included bone pieces, scraps of tyres, and ornaments.

The hospital doctor said bone pieces were found at eight locations.

Initially police believed the locations with burnt traces might be used to burn bodies of victims with old car tyres.

on the initial story on tv forum, i mentioned the father in law was posted up there after the cpt amnesty.

i don't think i will ask about that part of his career up there again.

This story is being played down a lot. Execution squads of police officers is a very serious matter and will not be long before the international press gets its teeth into it. This is one matter the government should investigate and take action against all suspects. Action does not mean the usual inactive posts

If some of the bones are found to be human then they probably all are ! Personally I have never seen anyone (you know who I mean) trying to extort money from a cow or a goat

I believe that Ban Pheu has long had a reputation as being a fairly violent and lawless area and in the past I heard stories from family in Udon that police execution squads have operated in Ban Pheu for some years. Apparently using burning tyres is a hallmark of the police.
