I don't understand either.

The single entry has been no financial proof needed before.

Let us know how it goes.

They seem to of changed the requirements recently.

You can apply for a one year extension of stay based upon being the parent of a Thai but you will first have to legitimize your parenthood first. See: How To Gain Parental Rights As A Father

You also need 400k baht in the bank or proof of 40k baht income.

Once you have the extension you can apply for a single or multiple re-entry permit.

I was talking to the (competent) agent I use in Penang about a month ago. They said the consulate is initially only giving single entry Non O, but will give a multiple entry if you apply a second time. It sounded odd, but this experience seems to confirm that.

I have heard that as well.

But i already had non-o multiple from previous consulate.

It's just a matter of requesting the multiple non-o and showing a bank statement >100k baht (can be non-thai bank) in addition to the other paperwork. They dont even really look at the bank statement too hard. You put all the paperwork in order...he checks each document quickly, ask you a question about the category visa and then requests the fee.

But even if it is true that you may need a [recent] prior non-o single /multiple first, then you may have to do another trip. A pain, but not insurmountable .

The only problem with train option is that because of afternoon pickup time is too late, you need to stay an extra day.

Did the agent mention what the requirements for financial proof are? BeefSlapper's report seems to suggest 100K for a single O and 400K for a multi. I used Savannakhet last year and was contemplating going to Penang this year instead but if the bar has been raised to 400K for a multi and only given to those who have applied before I'll have to reconsider.

Why would penang have different requirments than somewhere else?

Are the consulates acting like businesses, and compete against other consulates to attract more customers?

Actually this change brings Penang into line with the majority of regional Embassy's/Consulates.

Fair enough. But why is penang/vietanne more 'friendly'

Are the consulates run like businesses in that they compete for visa fees?

Most Honorary Consulates are run as businesses but are expected to follow the policies of the Embassy to which they are accountable.

Many of these "differences" are historical and the reasoning behind them is now lost in the mists of time. Gradually these differences are being removed.

I do this every year in London for a multi non O.

Worked fine until 2 years ago with just birth certificate.

Then they asked for more documents .

I went to the kaet and he drafted a letter and all good now.

Is it that bad in Penang?

There is real discrimination that occurs at the borders. The boat going to myammar will often get waived through if only western foreigners are onboard. If it is neighboring nationals, the boat almost always stop and checked.

Then they go through thai immigration...why are they pulled into the office? What are they reaching into their wallet for?

The next time you go to penang, it should be easier, especially if you do it yourself. I doubt you'll need all 400k in bank acct. Even if you do, at least it doesn't have to be seasoned.

Often times it is fraud for that particular region...or practicality.

How many Laos nationals can really have 400k THB with 2 months seasoning if they are married to a thai national or have thai family? So it just made sense to ignore that requirement for that particular consulate.

Or Penang only issuing SETVs. Maybe the DE/TE/ME TVs were too suseptible to fraud. If people want to stay longer (legally), they will just get another SETV.

so Multi entry non O, if you not married

lets say you come back from Penang with that visa, initialy its 90 days, after 90 days, whats then? as its multi enry, you go to imigration to extend it for 60 days, then after 60 days you go out of Thailand and come back and repeat process until 1 year validity of the visa passes?

Thanks
