PATTANI: -- Security forces have been placed on full alert for possible violent incidents expected to be perpetrated by separatists to mark the 12th anniversary of the Krue Se mosque incident.

A total of 108 ethnic Malay Muslims were killed by security forces in a day of violence on April 28, 2004 in Pattani.

Heightened security was imposed in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, four districts of Songkhla plus Hat Yai.

In Hat Yai township, territorial defence volunteers have been mobilized to foot-patrol the main streets which include Niphat-uthit 2-3 and Sanayhanusorn to look out for suspected bombs and to randomly check suspected cars and motorcycles.

Meanwhile in Narathiwat province, security officials have been examining video footages from surveillance cameras at and near Soi Lamai-uthit in municipal area where a motorcycle bomb blast killed one civilian and injured 12 others.

As a precaution against future bomb attacks, more concrete barriers are to be put in front of shophouses in municipal area which can help absorb the force of explosions.

Fourth army region commander Lt-Gen Wiwath Pathompark is due to visit Narathiwat today to give moral support to officials and civilians alike.
