MTEC unveils breathable food bags

BANGKOK, 28 April 2016 (NNT) - The National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC) has unveiled its newly developed food storage bags that help fresh food to last longer.

The innovation, called Active PAK, enables fruit and vegetables to retain freshness and taste by the Equilibrium Modified Atmosphere (EMP) technology. While ordinary plastic bags can keep fresh food for around three days, Active PAK breathable bags can build a temperature equilibrium which enables food to stay fresh for as long as eight days.

The innovation is aimed at reducing the economic loss faced by the agricultural and business sectors. Some superstores have opted for Active PAK breathable bags. Plastic food packaging manufacturers have adopted the production technology. It took the MTEC three years to come up with the product.

But with all of that effort, are they bio-degradable?

Any idea of exactly how this works to "build a temperature equilibrium", or is that secret?

Doing a quick google shows there are a lot of companies selling these types of plastic bag.

Been around 20 years but took them that long to steal the secret. Oh and Gamma rays increases shelf life by years no refrigeration needed.

I've since had a bit more of a look into the bags (pun intended). One of the manufacturers says:

"Bags are constructed of a special film that has a micro-porosity that allows the transfer of simple and complex gas molecules through the plastic wall of the bag"

A long time to steal that secret - probably due to the slow internet here in past years.

I thought the Thai government was exhorting the population to respect intellectual property rights?

Probably been around long enough that the patent expired.

If they even had a patent in Thailand.

Permeable films and modified atmosphere packaging have been in use in the West for decades. This is not new. Only to Thailand perhaps.

Just more BS from a government dept. who wouldn't know their arse from their elbow. As pointed out by others, it's been around for years and it is already available in Thailand. I have been buying breathable plastic bags in BigC for a quite sometime.

I take it then as a choice for suicide, a breathable plastic bag over the head would be a no-no?

I always removed fruit and veg from the plastic bags/trays and place in my cotton bags when I get home. Try keeping mangos, bananas and especially mushrooms in plastic for more than one day. A good step forward.

I believe laundry bags would suffice. Go for it coffee1.gif
