BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha today officially opened the "Startup Thailand 2016" at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in the government's effort to help drive the country's economy forward.

The event will begin today until May 1.

The opening of the event was participated by several state agencies, entrepreneurs in startup businesses from the private sector in the country and abroad.

More than 200 booths of startup business operators were set up at the convention centre to show their business potentials.

The government aims to promote startup businesses in driving the country’s economy.

According to National News Bureau of Thailand, the Startup Thailand 2016 event will present potential startup businesses in five categories, namely lifestyle, medical, education, finance, and agriculture, with highlights on the presentation of applications which could help improve the quality of life, such as event manager, golf court reservations, elder care, job searching, and financial assistance application

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will also be introducing the Agri-Map system which is an agriculture map made for the active management that will address many issues.

The only thing left to drive the economy is for the general and his cabal to resign.

Err, don't you normally have a "promotion year" one) advertised in advance of that year, and two) run the promotion for more than four days?

startup 2016, released at the end of april, no it is thai calendar, so perhaps 2 weeks into the new year.

'unite to rise' perhaps a prophetic slogan.

Shut Down and Start Up... same mentality, same people. But as always the truth is the opposite of what they say.

"On Platform Two the train will be going backwards to nowhere good."

Can I register a start up?

'Operation Start-up' smacks of desperation and will just encourage more Thais to get into debt, blindly believing their business will be a success...coffee1.gif

Why not just order the economy to improve or face ten years in prison? Seems to be their solution for everything else...

I would think the PM and Thailand would be best served by promoting "shutup", starting with the PM and his incompetent cohorts.

Good idea to promote start-ups within Thailand, since the junta isn't likely to attract much new outside investment. International investors prefer countries with transparent government and rule of law. The junta talks transparency but acts opaquely. Rule of law requires a constitution that isn't suspended every few years.

There are very few things that happen in convention centers that are truly interesting and useful. This is not one of them.

This is silly. We about to be deluged with yet more massage shops and noodle stalls? I've yet to see a less diverse market than here in Thailand. As a Thai cop said to me 'they haven't the education to know how to do anything else'. And therein lies the problem. They must first educate the people to give them choices, learn about different business models, not to mention providing better service in whatever they choose to do. This lot, same as the others, no fan of 'diversity', so just more hot air.
