Visa questions for a Mexican residing in the Netherlands travelling for 5 months in SE Asia

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm travelling with my gf (she is Dutch) from Amsterdam to Bangkok in mid July till end of August, and then intend to do an internship (to be confirmed, but somewhere in the region, SE Asia) and fly back from Bangkok in early December back to Amsterdam.

I intend to visit with her Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. But then I was planning to take her to the airport as she flies back home in August from Bangkok to Amsterdam.

My question is, what would be the best way to deal with the topic of a visa for Thailand. Is it possible to get a single entry visa to land in Thailand and then travel there for a bit and then apply for another visa in neighbouring countries to head back to Thailand to say goodbye to her? What's with the idea that I have to prove that I will leave Thailand within 30 days of arrival, specially since I won't be there for so long since I will be travelling via land across the region.

Thanks in advance :)!

You need to apply for a single entry tourist prior to starting your trip. You can apply for it at the embassy. Info: http://www.thaiembassy.org/hague/th/services/42920-Holiday-in-Thailand.html Or the honorary consulate in Amsterdam. Info: http://www.royalthaiconsulateamsterdam.nl/index.php/en/visa-service/visa-exemption

A single entry tourist visa will allow a 60 day entry than can be extended for 30 days at an immigration. You could apply for a re-entry permit to make your trips out of the country to keep the remainder of your 60 day entry or extension valid when you re-enter the country for a fee of 1000 baht.

You could then get another single entry tourist visa in the countries you mentioned. If you get a re-entry permit you do not need another visa until your original 60 day entry or 30 day extension ends.

The proof of travel out of the country within 30 days is only for those that qualify for a visa exempt entry that you do not qualify for. If you have a visa proof of onward travel is not required.

I don't think I have ever seen a Mexican in Thailand. But, good for you.

You may want to look into a METV. 60 day max and no limits on exit/re-entry.

Where do think he would get the METV. He does not mention having residency in the Netherlands. That is one of the requirement to get one.

Hi guys, I do reside in the Netherlands (I'm doing a Master's Degree as of now, but will soon start my second year which involves the internship and therefore my intentions of heading there). Main problem I saw with the METV requirements is that I need to prove that I have saved 5000 euros and I study based on a scholarship that provides me with an income of 1090 euros per month. So even though I have saved some money, I don't have a way to prove 5000 euros even though I have more than enough "income" to easily pass a few months in Thailand.

*Also, my girlfriend is gonna use the concept of the visa exempt rule as she is Dutch. However, does that mean that she needs to buy a cheap/unused flight to prove she won't stay there for more than 30 days?

Thanks in advance! :)

You don't really need the METV for your trip.

Your girl friend could well be asked for onward ticket within 30 days of arrival to board her flight. A cheap one way ticket to a nearby country would solve the problem. You might consider both of you getting one way tickets to Cambodia or Vietnam instead of traveling overland. You could then travel back overland.

But then if that was the case and I get a single entry one month visa, I would spend a few days in Thailand, then fly to Cambodia/Vietnam and then head back to Thailand via land doing like a circuit around those three countries. However, would I then need to get another single entry one month visa in Cambodia prior to re-entering Thailand? Or is it still possible to ask for a re-entry stamp within the visa duration in order to not waste that visa and if possible, where can I get it? :)

Thanks for your help ubonjoe, you have been really helpful! :)

A tourist visa allows a 60 day entry not 30 days. You could get a re-entry permit for that 60 days and make your trip and get the remainder of it when you enter Thailand. You could then apply for 30 day extension at immigration. Then you could make short trip out to Laos for example and get another tourist visa that would allow you to stay for remainder of time you plan on being here.

Getting a tourist visa during your trip would still require a trip out for another tourist visa. Which would mean you would need a total of 3 tourist visas.

Ah I see.

So just to clarify, where can I ask for a re-entry permit normally when leaving Thailand for a short trip in neighbouring countries?

Also you mention that I would need 3 tourist visas in total. From what I recall, I see it as:

1. Visa in the Thai Embassy in the Netherlands (for 60 days) (1 tourist visa)

2. Then travel to neighbouring countries and come back within those 60 days to Thailand.

3. Ask for an extention of 30 days (by now we are already in early October)

4. Make a trip to Laos and ask for another 60 day tourist visa in Thailand (1 new tourist visa)

5. Before the end of those 60 days I will head back home as my flight leaves on the 12th of December and those 60 days would run out around the third week of December

So I just see two tourist visas there, am I missing perhaps something you mentioned?

Could you clarify this to me?

Thanks again :)

The three visas would be if you did not get the re-entry permit.

You can get the re-entry permit at any Thai immigration office for a fee of 1000 baht. You could also get it at either airport in Bangkok on departure from the country if you decide to fly out or at the Poi Pet crossing to Cambodia.

Why get 3 Visa?

I find it interesting how inefficient some suggestions are on this site. I guess it is all about saving a few bucks.?

Yeah OK. I personally am all about efficiency and reduced hassle.

Getting one Visa (METV) to cover everything seems like the best less hassle way to handle your situation. You can get a 30 day extension to 90 days on the METV if you want with unlimited re-entries.

But, up to you.

You clearly missed the post in which the OP said he could not meet the requirements for a METV

Well done !

Thanks guys for the responses.

Quick follow up, my girlfriend has come up with the idea of getting (in spite of being entitled to a visa exempt entree) to get a Thai visa since we are planning to be in the region (Thailand-Laos-Cambodia) for roughly 36 days and might want to avoid the hassle of buying flights to leave the country (so that we can explore more overland). Do you reckon that if both of us get a visa we won't need to show an outbound flight for it? She leaves back to the Netherlands mid-August and I head back there after an internship in Vietnam around mid-December and for that reason my return flight is for mid-December from Bangkok and hers is for mid-August as well from Bangkok.

Thanks in advance!

You may need a ticket out of the country to get the tourist visas.

You would need to get a another tourist visa in a neighboring country or unless get a re-entry permit for the 60 day entry before leaving the country to return. Your girlfriend could re-enter the country by getting a 15 day visa exempt entry at a border crossing.
