Prime Minister Hun Sen called for a continuation of the national effort to distribute water to those in need yesterday, instructing all provincial governors to stay in their provinces until the water crisis is over. Speaking at a ceremony for the National Population Policy 2016-2030 yesterday, the prime minister said the government should gain experience from this year’s drought as it prepares for next year’s hot season.

Next year, Mr. Hun Sen said, the government will dig more ponds and wells to limit the effects of drought. “I already said that all provincial governors must not walk out from their province, but still they left,” the premier said. “From now on, if I see any provincial governor in Phnom Penh during the drought, you will have a problem [with me].”

It is thought Mr. Hun Sen noticed a number of provincial governors were attending the ceremony. He ordered all ministers and senior officials to not call provincial governors to meetings in Phnom Penh, as doing so would waste those governors’ time.
