Migrants in Idomeni react angrily to idea of visa-free Schengen travel for Turkey

IDOMENI: -- Those anxiously waiting on the Greek-Macedonian border have reacted angrily to the European Commission’s decision to conditionally recommend visa-free access to Turkish citizens.

For the deal to be agreed, Ankara would need to meet certain conditions, including helping to block migrants from reaching Europe.

Ibrahim Moussa, a Syrian in northern Greece’s Idomeni camp said the decision left them between a rock and a hard place.

“We are stuck between two fires now,” he said. “We ran away from a war. Now all the Turkish people are going to go to Europe. They will walk around freely in Europe while we are stuck here.”

Muhammed, who is also from Syria, added:
“Today if the Europeans paid them to close the borders, they would keep the agreement and would once again allow people to enter through smuggling. Europe is not benefiting from all of this, Turkey is.”

Both the European Union and Turkey have expressed hope the offer of a visa deal for the Schengen zone will yield positive results.

Turkey is a safe country. Why would someone go to Turkey to escape war only to then continue on to Europe ?

This is going to hit the Schengen countries hard, of course the UK isn't a Schengen country.

This has the potential to break up Europe, they bring it on themselves.

How many more countries will also demand referendums to leave the EU over this crap ? I guess only time will tell.

The EU made a deal with the devil in the hope it all works out well. Welcome to the Union with their weak pc politicians.

I don't blame the migrants for their stand.

Turkey doesn't offer them the perceived free handouts they think they're entitled to demand from European countries - the "right" to free education of high standards, health care, housing, food, and cash handouts.

Nor will Turkey allow them the freedoms of expression and religion that they will demand from Europe.

Turks will get visa free travel - no rights to work, live, remain indefinitely or entitlement to any welfare benefits. However, the amount who would simply "disappear" and become illegal is open to conjecture, given the growing oppressiveness in Turkey.

Thank God Britain is not involved in this farce.
