BANGKOK, 5 May 2016 (NNT)- Reports from education units in the five southern border provinces show that much progress has been made for education development in the deep South of Thailand.

Education Minister General Dapong Ratanasuwan listened to the reports during his inspection of the Office of Education, Region 8, on April 25, 2016. During his inspection in Yala province, he discussed progress of education development with local education administrators, security and development officials, as well as members of the private sector.

The Ministry of Education has worked in an integrated manner with 20 relevant agencies to mobilize efforts for education management in the southern border provinces. The objectives are to reduce educational disparities, reinforce stability, and bring about lasting peace.

The Education Minister cited education as an important element to help ease various problems in the southern border provinces. In this regard, school curricula have been adjusted to suit the prevailing situation and local needs. Breakfast and lunch have been provided for tadika schoolchildren and local communities have been encouraged to join education management.

The Ministry of Education offers 400 scholarships a year to young people in the deep South to continue their studies at the higher education level. It has cooperated with pondok schools in upgrading the quality of non-formal education. Digital Community, Sufficiency Economy Learning, and Lifelong Learning Centers have been set up in various areas.

Boy and girl scouting activities have been carried out on a continual basis, along with diverse art and recreational programs, taking into consideration the multicultural society in the southernmost region, with distinctive culture, diverse beliefs, and unique identities. Teaching and learning of the Arab and English languages have also been improved to higher standards, with emphasis on communication skills. Local education administrators will be developed as change agents, as well.

In the next step, the Ministry of Education will establish a southern teacher center to provide local teachers with better protection. A special education center will also be set up in Yala to provide educational opportunities for children with disabilities. Around 1,000 local schoolchildren have been found to require this special form of education. The new special education center will be opened in the 2017 academic year.

Regarding higher education, the Ministry of Education had launched a science program in sports for secondary schoolchildren living in the southern border provinces to continue their studies in this field at the higher education level. Prince of Songkla University, in Songkhla province, serves as the center to promote sports for health among young people, while Thaksin University, also in Songkhla, serves as the Pencak Silat Center.

Vocational education centers have been formed and young people have been encouraged to opt to vocational education. More positions in government service have been offered to local residents, who have also been encouraged to return to their hometown and use their professional knowledge to develop their own communities.

Since the southern border provinces are special areas, the Ministry of Education has placed special emphasis on them.

"Reports from education units in the five southern border provinces show that much progress has been made for education development in the deep South of Thailand."

This report mentions "education" at least ten times. Aside from a few general examples of activities, scouting, art, language, etc., at no point does the Office of Education define the term "education" or state the objectives and goals of education.

More patting themselves on their own backs, with nothing changed and nothing accomplished.

Well said, I add one more: no mention of changing educational methodology to get interaction in the classroom, gets kids talking so they develop the ability to explain problems / explain their ideas and thoughts, to promote continuous analysis and cognitive thinking, creative thinking etc.

does this include cult deprogramming?

that says it all. the bombings will stop when all the infidels are dead or have joined the cult.

horrible. like having cancer and doing everything you can to speed it up.
