Heat Wave in Thailand Kills 34 People in Less than Two Months

BANGKOK – Soaring temperatures that show no signs of easing have raised concerns about more deaths from heat stroke, which has already killed 34 people in less than two months.

The Public Health Ministry is closely monitoring conditions as high temperatures have persisted into May, although the Meteorological Department still expects the rainy season to start on May 15.

Heat exhaustion killed 34 people between early March and April 22, according to ministry figures released on Saturday.

Why? No one is actually dying because of the heat. They are succumbing to underlying chronic illnesses such as heart and circulatory system disease, kidney failure, respiratory disease and HIV.

I would have thought the number of heat-related deaths would be much higher.

Why? No one is actually dying because of the heat. They are succumbing to underlying chronic illnesses such as heart and circulatory system disease, kidney failure, respiratory disease and HIV.

A lot of terminally Ill people, e.g. cancer patients, actually die from the likes of pneumonia or organ failure, however, the death is attributed to the actual illness. As in the above mentioned deaths, they are indicating that the death is attributed to the excessive and prolonged heatwave.

I'm surprised it's only 34. Suggests Thais have a far higher tolerance towards heat than most people. If a heatwave of this magnitude happened in France (a country with a similar sized population as Thailand), probably 1000 people would have died.
