DPM responds to NRSA suggestion to suspend political group charges

BANGKOK, 10 May 2016 (NNT) – The Deputy Prime Minister has affirmed that a recommendation by the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) to suspend charges against all political groups is still only at the discussion stage.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Kreau-ngam said he has not yet spoken to the NRSA Chairman Seri Suwannaphanont about his body’s suggestion to suspend all legal charges against the country’s various political activist groups for the sake of unity, but assured he is willing to discuss the matter and give his input.

Wissanu said the NRSA is likely still collecting all views on the idea and pointed out it has yet to finalize a statement on the recommendation. He said the government has asked that the NRSA consider 3 aspects of such a move, namely; its process, its timing and public acceptance. He admitted it was likely certain groups would oppose the suspension of specific charges or for certain individuals and said the move must be thoroughly considered.

The deputy premier responded to calls for the idea to be enacted through the Constitution’s Article 44 by saying that further consideration is needed.

I don't think that's the reason. Whatever the reality might be, the Thai government is never going to admit it has caved in to pressure from the despised foreigners. whom it holds as 'inferior' for reasons we can't talk about.

I suspect it has finally dawned on the boss that the referendum is likely to be defeated, and given the unwise things he has said this year, he can't either cancel it without loss of face, ignore the result without serious consequences for him, or win it. He is therefore likely to offer increasingly frequent sweeteners (like bailing Ja New's mother for instance after stupidly trying to use her as a hostage - an inducement for Ja New to 'behave himself') to try and get people on side.

Personally I think the man is drowning and just thrashing about on his way down - he's most certainly comprehensively out of his context and out of his depth. While he may be smart and competent in the context of Thais, there's little doubt the international community do not hold him in any great esteem.

I think we can expect more and more trivial (though seemingly generous) sweeteners between now and August - all of them temporary and most of them aimed specifically at the yellow-shirts to try and bolster his support among the already converted. Even the boss knows that Thais tend to have a short span of attention and won't remember his promised for more than a few weeks.

There is absolutely no doubt that he is way out of his depth. However, even for a Thai, I think he is nether smart nor competent, just the opposite in fact, especially when we see blunder after blunder and his loose canon of a mouth. His downfall is imminant, and as you stated, I think he may be starting to realize the truth of it all. Then again, that is probably giving him too much credit.

That may be true but I am deeply sceptical. My assessment of the boss's intellect is that he is probably the only person in Thailand who believes it. And that includes the paid mates pollsters who manipulated compiled the data.

I was being ironic. An approval rating of 99.3 % is only achieved in North Korea and only due to its great leader.

Yellow/PAD/PDRC/Dems/Abhisit: Full amnesty, no strings. Enjoy.

All others: Once you plead guilty, are convicted and finish serving your jail term(s), we'll grant you amnesty, with special double-secret probabtion.
