I recently purchased my first SmartPhone due to the fact that 2G is going away (or already has).

I'm looking for a good android app for my phone that will translate Eng to Thai and Thai to Eng..... Audio pronunciation would be great but not necessary.

I would like it to be available when there is no online (WiFi) connection as well.

Anyone have any good suggestions?

Reading around I see a lot of positive things about 'Talking Thai' but looking into that app they seem to want to butt into my privacy which I'm not too keen on.

I'm wondering why they need all this access:

This app has access to:
Photos/Media/Files
Uses one or more of: files on the device such as images, videos, or audio, the device's external storage
Wi-Fi connection information
Allows the app to view information about Wi-Fi networking, such as whether Wi-Fi is enabled and names of connected Wi-Fi devices
Device ID & call information
Allows the app to determine the phone number and device IDs, whether a call is active, and the remote number connected by a call

There is none better than Talking Thai Dictionary ... just use Google Play and download... it is around 800 Baht... but you will never regret it. And it is easily transferred to a new phone should your's becomes lost or damaged ... Google keeps track of all your Apps downloaded and installed ... a simple click to reinstall them ... You really get what you pay for here...

Paiboon is the best! http://word-in-the-hand.com/thai-dictionary-for-android/

I have complained to them many times (as have others) that their app requires too frequent reauthorization. This is not their doing, It is Google Play Store policy. A fix for this and a new version of the software is due soon. Read their website for more details.

That is 'Talking Thai' and even though its been stated as being one of the best out there I am still wondering why does an app such as this need this info:

This app has access to:
Photos/Media/Files
Uses one or more of: files on the device such as images, videos, or audio, the device's external storage
Wi-Fi connection information
Allows the app to view information about Wi-Fi networking, such as whether Wi-Fi is enabled and names of connected Wi-Fi devices
Device ID & call information
Allows the app to determine the phone number and device IDs, whether a call is active, and the remote number connected by a call

I am hesitant to sign up for an app that requires that much of my private information and I cannot understand why it would be needed to support the app..

If you're looking to translate sentences then the Paiboon app is NOT what you want. It's just a talking dictionary.
