BANGKOK: -- Government should support business enterprises which hire retirees so that they will have a means to make a living and also they can pass on their working experiences to their younger colleagues, said Associate Professor Supachai Srisuchart, vice dean of the faculty of economics of Thammasat University, on Thursday.

Speaking at a panel discussion on ageing labour, Mr Supachai pointed out that business enterprises these days do not attach importance to their elderly staffers or retirees despite the fact that they have accumulated working experiences which can be useful for their younger staffers.

He said that instead of letting the elderly staff to retire and leave the offices, they should be retained by means of extending the retirement age or by means of employing them on contractual basis.

In order to encourage business enterprises to employ retirees, Mr Supachai suggested that the state should give tax incentives to the enterprises or other forms of reward.

Representatives of Home Products Centre, Pung Noi Bakery and Sor Heng noodle manufacturer told the panel that several retirees that they have employed are as capable as their younger colleagues.

Definition, "withdrawn from one's position or occupation : having concluded one's working or professional career"

I totally understand efforts to open spots for older folks to tap their knowledge but folks who have retired ????

It is very difficult for many Thais over 30 to get a simple factory job.

''Pass on their working experiences''. Sadly most older Thai's in the workplace do not communicate with younger people very well and the underlings dare not ask any pertinent questions, so this idea is a non-starter. Also; the older generation only knows 'one way' to do anything and that way is normally outdated by a generation or more. This is just a way of trying to keep older people in position for a few more years and not making way for the younger folks to move ahead in their career's.

The country is run by old farts that should have retired many years ago because they want to hang on to all the bad old ways of doing things, a sure way to hold the country back if ever there was one.
