Terrible news this.

Rip to the student, condolences to his loved ones.

Time for red flags and life guards perhaps?

Red flags are no deterrent to those determined to swim where they choose.

As the Phuket lifeguards who are often left with the task of retrieving bodies

Very sad.

It is odd that people think Thai beaches are "safe". Most of them including very popular ones like Patong and Nai Harn have very strong rip tides and currents. At Patong you can see huge masses of water flowing incredibly quickly and at the same time almost imperceptibly..

RIP.

Red flags are a good idea, at least people some people might not go out, but need the presence of qualified life guards.

The presence of lifeguards does not prevent people ignoring red flags !

Lifeguards, even in Australia, can only supervise a relatively small section of the beach.

Those who do not want to swim in a supervised section of beach/water do so at their own risk .

I disagree, although maybe most drunk chinese or russians might not bother nor care, if those flags just once a year save somebody's life it is already worth putting them up, isn't it ?

Did I argue that the flags should not be placed?
