Hello everyone

A high-profile private high school in Bangkok has offered me a one-year contract with a 50% teaching load, visa and work permit. Even though it's just a 50% position, the salary is good. If I accept the contract, this high school would be my main employer.

But because this is only a part-time position and since I have many years of university teaching experience, I would like to teach evening courses at universities at the same time. However, the hiring people at the high school told me that my teaching at another place (no matter whether it's a university or some other school and even if there are no scheduling conflicts) would be illegal and therefore not acceptable to them.

1) Are they right? Having a second employer is illegal?

2) In my understanding it is legal and possible to get a second job as long as the main employer is informed and agrees to it. Is this correct?

3) If it is in fact legal to get a second part-time job, would the name and address of the second employer have to be entered in the work permit I get through the main employer OR would I have to get a second, separate work permit?

I'd appreciate your insights.

  1. No and No.
  2. Yes.
  3. The second job would be added to the existing work permit.

Could is a better choice of word. In this instance it would be better if the OP had 2 separate work permits, therefore negating the need for the first employer to even know about the second one.

All you need is a letter from the first employer, saying that it is ok for you to have employment elsewhere

There is no legal requirement to have permission from one employer to work for another one. The only thing is that it may be written into his first contract that he is not allowed any other work, but as his is a part time position, that should not be the case.

Only one work permit is allowed per province. If a job is in one province and the other is in another one then a 2nd work permit would be needed int the other one.

In order to add another employer to an existing work permit it requires the employer that supported its issue approval.

Yes there is as your work permit is employer specific, therefore, to work for a second employer in the same juridiction, permission is needed from the employer who obtained the inital work permit
